Black Rat Snake

I walked out my back door to do some yard work yesterday and was surprised to see a black rat snake right there. A young one. He was extremely docile. the most docile black rat I've ever seen. I was concerned he was injured because of this behavior but I could see no wounds and his movements did not seem unhealthy.

My son got to pet his first snake. He liked it and asked about it again today. I let the snake go in my woodpile and he seemed perfectly okay. My son really got a kick out of him.

How large do those snakes get to be ?

Big!! Real Big! Close to 7' I would imagine. I used to catch huge ones where I grew up in Monmouth county.

you got to love black rat snakes.... the biggest i've found has been in the 6-7 foot range, but they are known to exceed 8'
