Found 4 of them hanging on a pine tree by Cedar Creek today. In the second photo, he had curled his tail end at me in warning.

The moths are harmless, but the caterpillars have poison sacs attached to spines on their body that can cause some painful discomfort.

Ah, I see. Thanks! So does the adult assume a posture that might cause a predator to think that it too has the ability to inflict pain? Nice trick!
 
I picked up the caterpillar on an outing once. I thought it was something interesting. Sure was! My finger hurt for several days after that.
