If you check out the last photo in this group from the same photographer, you can see the camera flash he designed. It is made from a goldfish cracker box 
I can see how that can help. I could get even closer photo's with my camera; however, when I get close my camera blocks the light.

Oh my goodness, those are AMAZING. I had to do some macro photography and video of fleas and ticks recently, I would totally have contacted this guy.
