Me and my friend left for the Pines on Friday at 9:00 A.M., our intentions were to explore by vehicle the above thread title areas, our first stop was in the Oakwood section of Medford Township off of Tuckerton Road to find a Geodetic Survey Marker, the following is a pic of the Marker. The designation on it is BC10.

We then got back in the vehicle to go from Tuckerton Road to Atsion Road, on Atsion Road we viewed the following Wharton Sign.

Our next objective was to go to the Village of Dellett to view another survey Marker, arriving in Dellett we found the Marker within minutes. The designation is BC07.

After viewing the Marker we then traveled to the Plastic Bridge and on the way my friend spotted the following Marker. The designation is NJ334 S.

Driving past the Plastic Bridge and arriving at Raritan Avenue i was thinking about putting the Jeep into 4 wheel drive but decided to stay in two, driving on Burnt House Road we then made a right hand turn onto Maple Island Road to see if we could find the Sleeper Survey Disc, due to the multitude of Pine Flies after a five minute search with no results we then traveled to Sandy Causeway. While on Maple Island Road we found what might be a cellar hole.

We then traveled to Sandy Causeway to look for some Ruins in the area, we came upon the following.

In this cellar hole there is a lot of placed wood protruding out of it.

We then spotted this pipe protruding out of the ground.

Then finally a pic of this orange flower of which i do not know the name.

Now it was time to move on to the Fleming Pike, we went to Chew Road turning right on to it from Sandy Causeway, traveling for a short time on Chew Road we made a left hand turn on to the Fleming Pike, in the area we found the following.

We were impressed how the Fleming at one point split into a divided highway, we then went on to visit the Jersey Central Railroad Trestle over the Albertson Branch, parking the Jeep we then walked a short distance to the Trestle, a view of the Albertson from the Trestle.

And now a view of the Trestle crossing the Albertson. This area was tick infested but we were prepared.

Arriving back at the Jeep we then traveled to Union Road, on the way to Union Road i took a pic of this sign and the Bridge.
IMG_0615.jpg

Turning left on to Union Road we then wanted to see if we could find a C/A County Marker, after a short search we did not locate it and then we traveled to Rt.561 to view another C/A County Marker, this one we found. The designation on it is 1K1.
IMG_0616.jpg

We then left the area and traveled to Middle Road to view two more Survey Markers, here is a pic of the first one. The designation on it is 1G1.
IMG_0617.jpg

Further up the the Road we found the second one. The designation on it is 1H1.
IMG_0618.jpg

We then viewed this plaque on a culvert.

We then got back in the vehicle and traveled on Rt.206 to the Paradise Lake Campground sign and took a short side trip to the Paradise Campground, we turned around after we saw the visitor must register sign stopping back at the gate to consume some more water, we had two jugs of it today.

We then exited on Rt.206 made a right hand turn and then traveled to the Road that takes you to the Pleasant Mills Methodist Church, we wanted to find another Survey Marker but after a quick search we had to give it up due once again to the abundance of Pine Flies.

It was then time to call it a day, we went to the Valenzano Winery on Old Indian Mills Road, did some sampling, i then bought a bottle of La Brusca Wine, i did, and neither my friend care for the Old Indian Mills Wine, it was too dry. Then it was off to my friend's house in Tabernacle for free cold refreshments.

All in all besides the Pine Flies it was a good day, the Roads were mostly puddle free, i stayed in two wheel drive all day, and there were only two Markers that we did find that i had on my find list.

Nice finds Jim. Sorry you could not search for others because of the bugs.

Just a little tip that might save you some trouble in the future. The designations on the NGS markers have a space between them. So the 1G1 is actually 1 G 1 and so it. If you search for them on the site you will need to type that properly. With that said, take notice of how the marker is spelled on the one you did not find. Compare it to the datasheet and what it actually says on the marker itself when you find it.

Thanks Guy, the flies at the Sleeper and at Nescohague were beyond belief.

Any info on the NJ334 S Stone ?

Is that a property marker that we found at the edge of that field ?

Thanks Jim

Jim,

that orange flowering plant is called butterfly weed.It generally grows by itself and not in a bunch and is common to disturbed sandy soil and loves hot barrens and old fields.

Me and my friend were talking about the comma placement on Friday, i have sent an e-mail to the Indian Mills Historical Society notifying them about the error, i wonder if they do know about it.

Not to get into specifics, i also informed them about why there is not an Historic Sign for where the Indian King Tavern once stood on Atsion Road, the Tavern was built by Ephraim Cline in 1795.

If i receive any reply from them i will post their answer.

I just received a return e-mail from the Indian Mills Historical Society. It reads as follows.

Hi Jim

Thanks for the e-mail. Feed back, both positive and negative is always welcome and necessary to improve any organization. Yours is not only positive but they are two good points.

On the Wharton Sign the comma is okay, however they left off the decimal point before the 4. It should read 16,108.4 acres, which is the correct acreage in Shamong Twp.

Cline's Tavern is a great place for a historic marker, however it is state property and that is always a problem. They keep on taking our Wharton Sign down. We had a hard time keeping it there.

Like i said, Cline's Tavern is a good place for a marker and i will look in to it. Maybe some day you will ride by it and it will be there.

Thanks again for your input, Don Catts, IMHS.

I just received another E-Mail from the Indian Mills Historical Society, the Wharton Sign on Atsion Road is now fixed. Also they are now looking into erecting an Historic Sign at the site of Indian King Tavern, but it will take some time for that to occur.
