Yesterday with the outlook of a possible high temperature of 70, me and Ed Campbell meeting up for the first time decided to do some Stone and Monument searching in an area that includes the Bogs at Friendship and other areas in the Pine Barrens.

We met at the Friendship Ruins and then started our exploration, the following pics that i will post Ed and i have never been to before, Ed has other pics that i have visited but his pics are a first time visit for him, on this exploration i would like to point out that Guy and Manumuskin (AL) have been to these sites just recently, we did do some bushwacking today.

The day started out, me wearing two sweat shirts, but after a short while, we were down to tee shirts, sweat was the norm yesterday. Our first place to visit was rather easy going, and always with Guy's and AL coordinates we found what we were looking for within minutes. The following NJ Monument shown with the 8 on it points to a Stone location, Guy's expertise has taught me what to look for when Monuments like this are encountered.

The next pic is the of the Stone 8' away.

After viewing the Monument and Stone for a short time we then moved on to our next venue, here is a pic of the next Monument that we found. Notice once again the line pointing the direction to the Stone and the distance to the Stone 8'.

Moving on we then visited the next Monument, notice the L on the Monument plate, i do not know what the L stands for, maybe Guy can chime in to inform us, Ed and i were discussing what the L meant but an explanation went unsolved. I have looked for this Monument in the past and could not find it, but Ed was here before and led me directly to it.

Returning to our Jeeps instead of walking to the next site we drove to our next location and after a short walk we found the following Monument.

Next is a pic of the Stone associated with this Monument.

We then headed off to an area to view the next Stone that we wanted to visit, with a warning of bad briers from Manumuskin and Guy and after a medium bit of struggle we found the Stone.

After viewing the Stone we returned to our Jeeps and decided to drive as close as possible to our next Monument and Stone location, again with a warning of even worse briers, and a possibly wet area according to the topo map, it was dry though, we entered the briered area and a longer struggle, the briers to get to the next venue were for us beyond belief, we got entangled numerous times, we finally arrived bloodied at the location.

Here is a pic of the Monument again depicted with the distance locator on it.

We then after uncovering the Stone took the following pic of it.

After viewing the Stone and as always if Stones are buried, i recover the Stone, it was now time to leave and go to our next location in the Pines, after a long struggle to leave this Hellish environment, i would not even attempt this in the Summer, we returned to our Jeeps.

We then drove to an area with two Stones, i had viewed them before, but i wanted to show Ed the location, moving on we then drove to another Stone location that was easy to get to, enough for briers, this site was easy to get to. A pic of the Stone.

We then left the area and on the way to Tuckerton Road we came upon the Sawmill site at Sandy Ridge, we noticed a man exploring the site, i explained to him that if he knew the location of a Survey Disk in the Pines and he said he knew the exact location, i said that we were going to the Tuckerton Road area to view another Stone and Monument and if he would still be here when we returned, he opined that he would take us to the Survey Disk site.

Exploring around Push Line Road and viewing what we wanted to see, i was at the Stone and Disk site before, it was the first time for Ed, we returned to the Sawmill site, Ed had to return home to attend to personal business, the man hopped into my Jeep and upon arriving at the site he had found the Disk within 10 minutes, i have dug numerous times to find the buried Disk without success and was elated when i saw it.

I then took the man back to his vehicle at the Sawmill site, it was time now to return home, i was exhausted, my back was killing me, i had one tick on me today, returning home after a 108 mile trip i was relating to my Wife what was to me a very satisfying trip, more so in meeting and exploring with another member from Ben's site, even more satisfying than finding the Stones and Monuments, numerous scratches were on my legs, arms, and hands, the next time Ed and me hook up we are taking the Dogs with us, i cannot wait. Also needed in this thread is a much needed thank you to Guy and Manumuskin.

James, you've become the premier reporter on the board :). Both the Smithville post and this one are excellent.

Thanks Mark, i am surprised that i could upload the pics or even type up the trip report this morning, the jar of Icy Hot that i bought from Rite Aid last night when i returned to my area is almost gone.:)

Jim,

A perfect day for exploring. Looking forward to your next adventure :)

BTW, "L" stands for "Line." That means the monument is not a corner. Usually when the property line is very long they put monuments are various locations along the line. That was one of them.

Bloody but unbowed! I agree with Mark--thanks for all you went through to get this. A fascinating odyssey. --G

[Sorry, TeeGate, I don't think I got the code right on the quote. How DO you quote just one part? ]

You got it correct. All you need to do is delete the text you don't want, but make sure you leave in what is between the [ ] at the beginning and the end.
