I connected my camera to the computer last nite, like I have done countless times previously, and windows no longer recognizes it. To troubleshoot I:

Turned camera off and on, tried connecting and disconnecting USB line on camera
Put the USB into a different port on computer
Rebooted the computer
Reinstalled the Zoombrowser and connection utility
Uninstalled batteries and memory card and reinstalled
Restored my computer system back to an earlier time

Nothing. Windows device manager never even recognizes the camera.

Any of you ever have this problem?

No fix yet. I am running XP service pak 2. I never downloaded 3 yet.

It is an A630 Powershot.

I don't have another similar camera cable.

Yes, my gps works and it is also USB.

Bob,

I have a cable since I have two Canon camera's. The next time I see you I will give it to you to take home and try.

Thanks Guy.

BTW, why do all USB device cables have a thick donut ring about 1 inch long on them about 3 inches from the device?

Bob,
I've got an A590 and just last night I had the same problem
(our cameras are rebelling)
All was well until I plugged in an SD card reader I just picked up and while all installed nicely it made my camera FUBAR and failed to load. I suck at this stuff so I was quite bewildered especially when the prompt came up to contact Canon customer support. BALLS!
Then, the darned thing took. It still doesn't act right though. something happened when I plugged in that card reader and it did it's thing.
I have tried other USB devices as well and it just seems to be the camera acting up. Part that sucks is that until now it was the easiest thing I ever used. Pretty idiot proof. I will be following this thread for answers.
I run Vista by the way if that matters.

What kind of memory card does that camera use? If its a compact flash card as pictured, I have an extra card reader you could try. Personally I prefer the readers as they are nothing but a connection and act like and external hard drvie.

46'r, oddly, it does not look anything like that one. Mine is a 1GB "Transcend". It does not have holes on the end, it has contact plates (the end looks like brass piano keys).

Probably an SD card and not a compactflash. The CF is about 1 inch square. The SD has a corner cut off. Is the Canon software still on your system? Have you checked Device Manager when you connect everything up to see if the camera is there? If its not there it could be the cable or the connector on the camera.

If you think you need a new cable, you might want to consider getting the reader, probably be cheaper and, IMO, easier to use. Radio Shack should stock them. Just verify what kind of memory card you use, I'm pretty sure that camera can use either SD or SDHC cards.

Thanks. My corner is cut off. The software is still on the system and I did uninstall and then reinstall to no avail. The camera does not show up in Device Manager. If Guy's cable does not work I'll visit radio shack.

Card reader

I find that the card reader is better than using the camera for the download. It is faster, no cable and you need not turn your camera on for the download. For under 10 bucks it is a good investment.

If you get a card reader, for future compatibility you should get one which is SDHC compatible. The really cheap ones may not be. The biggest SD card you can find these days is usually 2GB, and although that might seem large today it won't in a couple years.

I am already using 16GB and 32GB cards for the huge map files I'm making for my GPS. And many new camcorders are recording video to SD cards these days. The SDHC cards will not be properly recognized in an older SD card reader. It's a real nuisance actually; I just bought a new Dell computer a few months ago and the internal card reader doesn't recognize SDHC cards. :bang:

Also, doesn't your GPS use the same kind of cable as your camera? All of mine do, with the exception of the Magellan Triton which is weird.

Actually I don't see these on all USB cables, only a couple in my big bag o' cables have this. They are called "ferrite beads" and they are supposed to reduce interference generated by the connection of your external device to the computer: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ferrite_bead

Boyd, the GPS has a different connection. I have the old antique legend style.

Guy gave me his cable today, and now it works. So then I plug mine back in and that works too. Go figure.

Thanks for all the support I got on this. You guys are great.
