All,

There are a few other threads on this, but rather than open old threads I decided to start this one.

While looking over various maps with Jerseyman on Friday, we discovered a map that showed the locations of the Chatsworth Club and the Villa of Prince Mario Ruspoli. You can read more about the club and the prince at the below links. The map was from that era, and I was completely surprised at the general location the club was depicted at. It was not even close to the location that various authors described. I did not get a copy of the map, but will return and do just that.

The popular location puts the club about 100 feet off the road on the north side of the lake, and the map we saw did not show that to be true. It placed the club in this general location.

I know it seems inconsistent for previous beliefs, so we will just have to wait until I get a copy to really decide what it depicts.

That is a little surprising; the club location more than the villa. I would have placed the villa a little closer to the road, and like Ben I'm surprised not to see more evidence in the older aerials.

That's interesting. In the vicinity of the lake, I've found the remains of some sort of retaining wall, and what looks like a column, which are not even close to the locations shown. I wonder what they were from?

Until I get back to get a copy of the map, we can't rule out the map was wrong. So you may have found the correct location.

I've always wanted to explore the part between the legs of the "V" in the lake. I was there this past Friday with my canoe and thought about it, but the fish were biting :)

Bringing up an old thread....I just picked up a copy of Chatsworth capital of the pines, by images of america publishers. These are the books that highlight specific towns in a historical perspective. Marilyn Schmidt has it stocked.

Turns out the woodland twp historical society had photographic evidence of the Chatsworth club location all this time. Turns out the commonly held belief of the location was correct all along. Pretty neat photos also. The princes house location is not quite as exacting from photos but it is stated that it was adjacent to it. It amazes me that there is not more evidence of the club at the location. It was expansive with barns and tennis courts and a boardwalk. the grounds were perfectly kept and manicured but now you would be hard pressed to find a non-native tree in there.

It is a great book to pick up if you get the chance.

Greg, Marilyn told me that there are some sort of brick columns under the lake that the boats used to use as a landing or something in front of the chatsworth club. was this what you saw?

Jeff,
I took some pictures a few years ago with a disposable camera. If I can find them I'll scan them and post. Or I could just show you where they are sometime. They are easily reached with waders or a boat.
