Checked out Thompson's Beach today

Renee and her family, and I, hiked out to Thompson's Beach today, after visiting the East Point Lighthouse.
A hundred yards before we got to the lighthouse, Renee saw an old house in the marshes that was starting to fall down. Made for a good picture with my dad's lens zoomed out to 210 mm.
Thompson's Beach is pretty cool. It's such a shame that the township condemned people's homes and ran them out of town, back in 1998, just because they didn't want to maintain the road anymore. After they ran everyone out of town they tore down all buildings there and closed the road permanently. Then PSE&G began their wetlands restoration project.
What we saw so far in the town were a lot of old pilings, remains of bulkheads, and a big fireplace. Apparently one of the houses out there had a big fireplace. They tore down the house around the fireplace and left it there for some reason. The island seems to be quite long and we only saw part of it. Also the hike out there is a piece of cake. It might be a mile. I don't know. The sign on Glade road pointing down the Thompson's Beach Road says "Thompson's Beach 2 miles". But you drive a mile out before you have to park.
I guess that Seabreeze place must be near there, along with Shell Pile and Bivalve. It should be a good day when we all go out there. So we need to set a date and do it (see post on the get-togethers forum).
I had a great time today. I'm sure Renee can add to this.

bivalve and shellpile are about 5 mi west of thompsons beach near just below port norris.their basically the same place and their across the maurice river from thompsons beach.Seabreeze on the other hand is some distance away.it"s over below greenwich on the other side of the county.even to get to bivalve from thompsons beach is about a 20 to 25 minute drive because of the intervening river but seabreeze would be a good 40 minutes away.

We had a great time too!
We saw a lot of interesting tracks at Thompson's Beach, and I found a skull--maybe 8' or so. Probably muskrat? I did take pics but I haven't had a chance to upload them yet. And we found tons of horseshoe crabs shells--made great playtoys for Cedar, lol! He had a ball.

Sorry you couldn't make the whole day, Al, but glad you got there for a few hours!

What's this got to do with Thompson's Beach??? :think:
The Sweetwater casino is in Sweetwater.
It's nowhere near Route 9. It's at the end of 7th Avenue in Sweetwater, which is in Mullica Township. The restaurant fronts on the Mullica River and you can get there via car or boat. I have eaten there, but not in many years. The food was mediocre. I have always heard that you go to eat there for the ambiance and so forth, and not for the food, although it's not particularly bad.

I was at the East Point Lighthouse just a few weeks ago when I participated in the Annual Lighthouse challenge that is sponsered by the NJLHS, it is a very quaint old building. They opened the building for the challenge, and they also open it one other time per year, and that is the first Saturday of every August. I wouldn't mind making another trek down there, it is really nice and peaceful, you almost forget that you're still in New Jersey.

I've always wanted to do the lighthouse challenge! Did you enjoy it?
You're right, it is peaceful there...Joseph's last comments before drifting off to sleep last night was that he thought it would have been really "tool" (that's how he says cool) to see the houses that used to be down there, that he would love to live there.

I uploaded photos from yesterdays trip-Thompson's Beach (pictures of Cedar and some pics of tracks), East Point Lighthouse (pictures in there for you Guy!) and also Little Mill.

Steve--the lighthouse challenge is an annual event where you attempt to visit all of NJ's lighthouses in one weekend --what did you say Jim? 11? I think he said he did 8 of them.

According to a book I have, New Jersey has 19 lighthouses, counting offshore lighthouses. I guess they don't count those though.
I'd like to participate in the challenge next year. That would be fun.
I'll have to check out your pictures.

The challenge only uses the 11 that are on land, I made 8, but if you only knew. Well they are open Saturday and Sunday from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. I went with friends and we didn't get on the road till 3 p.m. on Saturday, and not till almost 12 p.m. on Sunday, so I think 8 out of 11 wasn't bad at all. Next year I'm not going with the same friends as I want to make all of them. If anyone is interested Eastpoint Lighthouse has an open house the first Saturday in August every year. That would be fun if we had our Pine Barrens group go on the 2004 challenge, it really is a fun time, even Steve would enjoy it :wink:
