Before I knew about chiggers, one Labor Day a few years back I found a small stand of skinny saplings in a low lying area in the woods near my house, cut one down for a walking stick, and sat down right there in cotton shorts, no socks and sleeveless tee to whittle the ends. I ended up in Cooper ER with 75 bites foot to neck (I counted em). They gave me Atarax, a first generation antihistamine which actually helped the itching, but made me so sleepy that I couldn't function. So I just put up with the insane itching for the next month and a half.
