:) :(:) :( :) update to your reply on my howardsville trip, smiliies representing the different sections of my 10/24/06 trip.smiley1,went to see clarks landing graves, ive been here in the late 70s before wanted to show my trusted friend george.walked the path, and on the way we saw the typical trash, also beer cans, whiskey bottles, ignored on the way,got to the little bridge, had to walk on the left strut holding on to reeds,50 percent of the bridge is collaped to the mullica side, alittle strut is all remains to get you across, george got a wet foot, saw the graves inscriptions deteriorating, just could read.i wish that little bridge could be repaired.on the way back,we investigated the trash, and george found an unopened 12 pack of miller lite, nice and cold, there is one less can in this case.wonder if it was a geocache????proceeded back to clarks landing road, took a right turn went to bremmen ave.made a left looking for any signs or clues to gloucester furnace, nothing, saw one road blocked off to the right, where there is a sign saying eyren haven, did not get out the car, next time will walk landing creek fromm clarks landing road to where indian cabin road crosses landing creek, for any traces of slag.made a right on indian cabin road to visit the shaler grave in back of egg harbor city lake, her and her three children are buried there, stone was restored in 1964,burial was in 1784.proceeded down indian cabin across rt.563 to the abandoned boy scout camp, what a mess, pentagrams, graffiti, place is still standing(different buildings)there was also a dummy body hanging from one of the buildings(Creepy).now for the unsmiling smilie of the trip, after the camp went south on rt.563to moss mill road, made right, toward elwood,we really wanted to see the old amotol race track outline, biggest no trespass signs, prosecution signs i have ever seen in pa.or n.j,site is maybe 50 to 100 yards off of moss mill road, private property is one of our most respected rights, but my question is,why didnt the state or county,or the township try to make this site a park or preserve, isnt this historic, the railroad(Pennsy) used to have trips to this racetrack,80,000 people would be at this track on raceday?does anyone know anyone from this gunclub so oneday we could have a looksee at this place?to end on a smilie, our last stop was winslow junction, alot of old cars, one was the texas and mexican railway, how great it would be to see the blue comet coming through here on its way to atlantic city.my dad told me stories of it when he used to go to lbi to surf fish in the 30s with his friends.lionel offered a o gauge version in i think 1993 for 1300 bucks.after winslow, the heat went on ,and me and george went on our way via 561 and 73 back to phila.might make a trip during the week to bear swamp hill, and pomeroy crossroads, never been to pomeroys,is it carable?thanks, jim

As far as Amotol is concerned, you must have missed the NJ Fish and Wildlife Hammonton Creek WMA sign on Moss Mill.
Most of the track is part of the HC WMA and not privately owned.
I hunted there the first year the state acquired Amotol. Remnants of the track are still visible and I remember a a lot of rubble and foundations.
Here is the WMA map available from Fish and Wildlife's website. All WMA ,maps are available online.

Very Car-able to get near. If you are coming from Philly I suppose you're best suited getting on 30 East, Hook onto 536 East, follow down Chew(536) like you are heading to 206, and you can hook the left at the Old JCR rails where the Fleming Pike crosses and follow it through. It's pretty simple in that way and you can park just about anywhere and walk it out along the rails which I like or poke around off Burnt house road too if you like. Couple nice old trestles to cross over the Clark & Sleeper branches while you're out there. Don't forget Dutchtown if you want to do a little extra snooping. Check the map site of your choice. Topo is fun for that little trek. But, to each his own. I hope that made sense, I guess it seems easy when you live here. ( I've noticed of late that Google Maps puts Parkdale nowhere near where it really is ?? )

Good question...I drive down that road all the time but have never gotten out of the car. There is an old dirt road where Walkers Forge Rd curves, and a bridge over the South River. Might be an interesting area to explore:

http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=...633&spn=0.009512,0.022831&t=h&om=1&iwloc=addr

The topo map identifies the old road as "The Pines", but it looks pretty thoroughly overgrown:

http://www.topozone.com/map.asp?lat=39.4406&lon=-74.7561&datum=nad27&u=4&layer=DRG&size=l&s=50

Now the Southern end of Walkers Forge Rd comes out on Rt 50 here:

http://www.topozone.com/map.asp?lat=39.39572&lon=-74.74735&size=l&u=4&datum=nad27&layer=DRG

There's a cool old church here, which is actually pretty close to my house. Have never really explored that area either though:

The glassworks is interesting and definitely worth visiting, but it's sort of a tourist attraction that is all fenced off. The really interesting stuff is at the north, undeveloped end of the park. Stop by the park office/nature center and pickup a trail map. Then drive north a mile or two on Rt 50 and turn down Artestian Well Rd. Park in the area on the left, maybe a mile down the road. Then spend awhile hiking down the maze of trails that used to be the road and railroad beds of Belcoville. There are some fascinating ruins to be seen back there, and since you have to hike in to get to them, most are still in pretty good condition. But they only date back to the 1910's, and of course the glassworks is much older.

BTW, Rt 50 is closed at 11th Ave for a bridge replacement. You have to detour down 11th and then back over to Rt 50.

Someone emailed me once and said there's a virtually unknown cemetery in Atlantic County Park, much older than Belcoville. He tried explaining the directions but I really couldn't follow what he was saying. Anyone else know anything about this? I'd like to see it.

mr.boyd,my interest is definitely belcoville ruins where you stated, but concerning walkers forge, any problem parking where forty wire meets pines road, private property, popular hunting area?its amazing that before they built rt.55,my dad,his friend and i,back in the 60s with my dad driving, used to take 559 to mays landing from weymouth, take rt 50 down to the parkway to go surf fishing on the north jetty in the cape may canal, where the ferries are docked, that i was always fascinated with this area of south jersey, the fishing trip was done every saturday, great weakfishing when the biguns were around.i will give you a heads up when i am coming down that way.thanks, jim

Rockwod has some ruins but they are on private property. During hunting season the owner puts up the yellow tape around the ruins area. I would recommend that you do not visit them especially during hunting season.

Sorry the links on Boyds post about Rockwwod don't work anymore.

Yes, I think I know what you mean. Follow my directions above and park on Artesian Well Rd. Across the road from the parking area you will find the entrance to a hiking trail. Enter there and bear to your left. It's somewhere around there. You can see the parking area here with Artesian Well Rd running East-West. It's on the South side of the Rd. If you pickup the map I mentioned I believe it's indicated.

This will give you a general idea, but the printed map available at the nature center has a lot more info:

Heh, Boyd is my first name so no "Mr." is needed :)

I believe you will find a little space to park near the bridge over the South River (see link in my post above). I see cars parked there sometimes, maybe fishermen or hunters? But like I said, I haven't explored around there myself yet.

If you're cruising around Atlantic County you might also enjoy Weymouth Furnace. Again, it's sort of a touristy place with fences, but the ruins are interesting.

You're welcome. Estell Manor park certainly isn't a wilderness experience, but it's still a nice place to wander around. The ruins there fascinate me.
