My wife and I were out at the downstream end of Penn Swamp late this afternoon and on our way in we passed an older guy who appeared to be backpacking to Lower Forge.
He was about a mile short of Quaker Bridge when we saw him and he was headed that way. Full pack, bed roll and sleeping bag.
He appeared to be in his late 50's and looked well-to-do and well appointed. (LL Bean type)
Tonight's forecast is for 13 deg. and windy. Not the best for a sleep out along the Batsto.
I wish him luck.
If I was a nice guy, I guess I could check back around Tuesday to see if he made it.
:)

I wonder if he just bought all that gear. I am getting ready to try camping again, and when I look at my old gear, I know I am in for some upgrading and money. I need to get out and rediscover myself, is what I am thinking.

Allow me to ramble a bit here. I was in the Mall on Route 1 in Metuchen today. I was shocked to see the wide diversity in people. But I was more shocked to see that I, a late middle-aged white man, was a tiny, tiny minority in that mall. I have the sinking feeling, back home tonite, that I am losing my identity. I am not racist, if you are thinking that, it is not that at all. Its just......I don't know....I can't put my finger on it.

It may have been my perception, but I don't think so; many of the people I encountered in that mall seemed very rude and distant, as if there was no one else around, and they had the aisle to themselves.

Oh come on now Bob, you know better. The rudeness was simply due to the fact that you were in a mall inhabited by North Jerseyans!

Yeah I agree with Badfish, I had the same feeling as a freshmen when I walked into to my microeconomics class at rutgers new brunswick. I felt like I was on a different planet. I simply went back to my dorm room and listened to guns and roses "one in a million" and subsequently felt much better.
