I was out hiking around Batsto yesterday during a controlled burn. I've never seen one before. It's very interesting to see. Does anyone know if these are scheduled every year or is how areas are targeted for burning? I'm a teacher and I'd love to be able to share some information in class.

They do controlled burns every spring in the Pine Barrens, but I'm not aware that they share the locations with the public. You can usually locate them by driving around out there and looking for smoke on the horizon. If you're out hiking, take a look at the trunks of the mature pitch pines and in many cases you'll see some evidence of black charring from the last burn.

They burn the grass fields at Hampton Furnace and Batona Camp every year about this time. They'll get a surprise at the Batona Camp field this year. There is a large CRT TV dumped in the middle of it, hidden by the grass.

Like ecampbell said, grass fields are usually burned every year. This is the most cost effecting way to keep forest succession from progressing from a field to a brush/tree stage. Some fields are maintained as such for game and non-game habitat, such as at Howardsville or Stafford Forge and others partly as a wildfire buffer for a prized area, such as Batsto. Forests are burned less often, every half dozen years or so, although some forests immediately around homes or other structures might be burned almost every year, effectively eliminating the shrub layer and giving extra protection from wildfire.

We just got back from a walk at Batona camp and met up with Karl and his group. Quite a nice turnout. We cleaned up some trash.
