I see Hear them and see signs of them all the time even in Medford. I know my dog growls when he detects the local fox is in the neighborhood, and several times I suspect it might even have been coyote. We've stumbled across them in Wharton and his behavior has always been to stop, growl and stare so I trust him not to chase them (he's a husky medium sized hound but hopelessly domesticated and easy pickings for a true predator). On the off chance I suspect there's a rabid coyote on my property that I can't I can't scare off , would I be asking for trouble if I took a shot at it? I stress that 99% of my encounters with them have been uneventful (once or twice we were followed for a bit) but I like to know what the limits of what I can and can't do are legally when faced with a serious potential risk to myself or neighbors.
