I took Sophie out for a walk today while I was intent on retaking the coords for a stone I found severalk years ago and somehow forgot to put it in my stone file.I need this stone to potentially plot the infamous Black Map that defeated me in the past.I think I made a mistake as to where this stone was on the map.Instead of the corner I thought I was at I'm thinking it's a stone on a line where it crosses the tracks and will need some tape measuring on the map to hopefully plot it right this time. This map has been hard to pin down to earth. In any case I parked along port cumberland road where the tracks cross. There were three cares parked here, two west of the road and one east (a white pickup) I assumed they walked across manumuskin trestle and were hiking the preserve, very good day for a hike.I pulled past the truck and 50 yards back into the woods on a little dead end road and turned around and parked facing out.I walked south basically on an old atv trail paralleling the tracks, after a hundred yards this trail again sees use and was chewed up by tire tracks.I watched the dirt for fresh tracks in case the truck was a hunter. No man tracks visible (turns out he must of walked the tracks themselves or hung further back to the left in the woods which are very open). This stone I remember being short of where I thought it should be no doubt because it's not the corner I thought it was.It had a metal stake, flags on a trree and a stone at the tree base all decked out in their best day glo orange paint.Must have been cheap paint because when I got there all that was left was the stone, the stake and three very faded flags,no paint. No what I have not mentioned yet as I got about half way out there, the stone was about 1200 ft back from the road I started hearing some kind of animal noise. As I got closer I thought it was turkeys. Now I thought to myself turkey season is in the spring so it shouldn't be a hunter with a call.As I got closer the turkeys turned into a pitiful scream like you'd hear from a fox caught in a trap.I found the stone but now the screaming is deafening.I thought this sound isn't over 50 yards away. Now I had been periodically yelling softly at my dog to stay close and up till that point she was a good girl and listened. She sudenlky took off like a bolt and I went after her. There was a man in camo around 40 years old sitting on the ground with a shotgun and she was all over him.Four letter words started going off in my head.He stood up and I was ready for a confrontation with a slightly younger man my height in much better shape and with a I assume loaded shotgun.I on the other hand had a folded up e tool with a three inch blade and a 70 lb Lab that obviously wanted to kiss him to death. I have had confrontations with hunters in the past and usually they just seemed aggravated but occasionally get verbal and of course being an idiot and knowing no fear when mad I go right back at em and this is what i expected here.I had never had my dog actually jump physically on a hunter before though I did have a husky once that grabbed a horse by the tail with a rider on it in Wharton. This guy stood up smiling and I proceeded to apologize thinking when is he going to explode. He said thats alright and shook his head as I got my dog back under control and he walked further into the woods and I headed back out.He told me he was calling Coyote.I now know what a coyote call sounds like, almost like someone had grabbed a dog by his nether region and squeezed very hard.I knew coyotes were trapped and I half expected to find one in a trap upon realizing close up even a fox could not make that much noise.I did not know people sat on the ground with a gun and called them in.It's a wonder he didn't shoot my dog thing he had a melanistic coyote coming to his call.Whoever you were dude I wish more hunters were like you once again sorry for the intrusion by the big black she wolf that rained on your parade.

Al,
This is the E-caller that I have :
http://www.gofoxpro.com/products/digital_calls/product_spitfire.php
Hewey has one too.

The stock sound library has some sounds, like "bay bee cottontail" or "raccoon fight", will curl your hair if you didn't know you were hearing an E-caller. Especially at night in the dark. It scares me sometime on a night hunt.

Here is the sound library:
http://www.gofoxpro.com/fpsounds/index.php
There is a voice talking over each sound so that you don't pirate them. Mine came with twenty four built in and you can up and download them easily. Some are free, some you pay for.
Lots of fun if you want to terrorize some neighbors.

My wife got it for me for Christmas last year and on the first day and in the first five minutes, I dropped a coyote that ran right at me using "coyote locator". Right place at the right time.

Glad to hear that everything worked well out with the hunter.

Scott, do you like hunting by calling things in with a device like that? I'm not a hunter, though not against it. I think if I hunted I wouldn't want to use anything artificial. I think I would scout, sit in the woods and wait, like I said I'm not a hunter so that could just be ridiculous, hah.

What....you wouldn't sit in a former camping trailer and just peer out the window and shoot on the chance something came by?

I think the E caller would be neat just as a device to call in critters. Not a hunter myself but I could see me using it to start a treefrog chorus or maybe lure in a Bobcat since I have never seen one at least not for sure on one sighting.

Al, get a mouthpiece such as a Primos Hot Dog caller. It looks like a duck call and you can carry it in your pocket. It takes effort to learn how to call but once you do, its a blast. You'll drive your wife and neighbors nuts practicing but you'll be able to call coyotes and other predators in. It can do prey distress calls along with coyote calls by swapping pieces. Its fun.

Dragon,

Scouting, camo, good cover and scent control are more important than the E-caller. I have four different mouth calls for wounded prey, barking and howling and they all work well. I have been using them long before I got the E-caller.
Hunting a coyote is the most challenging thing I have ever done. Their elusive habits and abilities to detect human presence are second to none.

Ever since man has hunted the use of prey sounds, decoys, scent and cover have all been important. The E-calller just adds another, more technological dimension.

For waterfowl in NJ, the early resident Canada season and the snow goose Conservation Order season now allow their use

Non-hunters would have a blast with an E-caller. Every time I have used it during daylight hours I have called in a red-tailed hawk. It is amazing to watch them fly at the sound full speed and them put the flaps down at the last second when they realize they have been duped.

As for Bob's flippant comment regarding the ethics of camper blinds, I will not dignify that with a cogent response.:D

Let me be clear i wasnt judging scott at all. I was curious to see his take on it because reading his posts he seems like a very traditional dude which i respect. Like i said im not a hunter, i would enjoy stalking prey, figuring out its habits but i just couldnt pull the trigger.

I could pull the trigger ifn I was hungry unless of course it was a snake. The thing today on survival shows seems to be killing snakes and eating them.Yes they would definitely make a good meal but I could pull down on Bambi quicker then a snake.I won't kill something I'm not going to eat.I know Scott says a coyote pelt is worth 17 bucks,I thinks I'd try cooking one up and if it was edible then I'd sell the pelt as a plus.I have read accounts whites eating dogs at dinners with Indian hosts and claimed they weren't bad at all I ate a morning dove once and it was good so a crow might not be bad either but if your not going to eat the crow don't kill it.It should be illegal anyway to kill anything smarter then we are.

I'm glad it didn't turn into a bad situation for you Al.

As Scott stated some of the calls will raise the hair on your neck! Letting the screaming jack sound bite rip at midnight to 2 miles back in the pines is some experience!

No way does an electronic caller put the ball in your court hunting coyote. I have yet to kill one over the electronic caller and we spend many a night hunting them in the winter in the pines. I have been hunting for 30 years and have only killed one coyote and that was in Vermont.

We have called in hawk, owl(very first light of the day), crow and osprey during the day. We use the E-caller on my friends back deck to call hawk in for his kids. Like Scott also stated every time a red-tailed hawk is sure to come in.

We have yet to call in our first coyote. We have had coyote call back to us when we use the howl and locator calls. We have never had one come into a prey call.

Al, I saw my first bobcat this past November. It was while I was coming down off a mountain in Vermont at the end of a day of deer hunting. The bobcat was bedded in the rocks and ledges looking away from me. I was able to get with in 25 yards of it. It had no idea I was there until I was getting my camera out of my pack and then it was gone like a ghost! He blended in with the rocks so good, I had to take a double take. Looking at the bobcat from the back it just looked like one of the rocks.

I've seen one bobcat and it was in south jersey at Manumuskin. Same thing though Chris, it was like a ghost, it heard me and saw me well in advance. I happened to glance up to my left and caught it walking away, I ran after it as it was only 25 feet away but it completely vanished out of site. Al I saw this by the old chimney's just up from the manumuskin river. I got tracks for a while but could never get a photo of it on my trail cam.

I wish I owned some land, I'd buy one of these callers.

Seen three yotes all my time in the pines. A beautiful blonde one on the side of the parkway in cape may, a grey phase in cape may courthouse and a dead grey phase on route 70 by eayerstown road...the last one was a huge yote, girl in front of me popped it and thought it was someones german sheperd. She called animal control and was checking for a collar to see who the owner was, hah.

Dragon, with the estimated 2011 NJ population at 8,821,155 you have an exact 1/8,821,155th interest in public lands that are loaded with wildlife waiting to be talked to.
Or shot, as the case may be.

I hunt almost no private land with the exception of land based Canada goose hunting. My wife and I just got back from a secluded Wharton spot west of the Wading and we saw a lot of coyote, fox and coon sign.

They're everywhere, they're everwhere !

have you ever heard of anyone sighting a Bobcat in the barrens?I think I saw one in the woods west of union lake back around 84 but it was too fast to be sure and I know where a tree is now that matches pics of Bobcat scratch trees on the internet to a tee off of 679.

you just answered my question i just posted to Chrisr, okay then it's official we do have Bobcats down here then.I have seen maybe eight yotes in the past 20 years and have heard many more.I am thinking about getting one of those foxpros to bring in critters just for sightings, maybe even get a bear or Bobcat in,birds of prey would be a big plus too, might pull in a mink have never seen a mink yet.

if you want redtails I know of several roadside hangouts that constantly sit in the same areas along the same roads everyday hunting roadkill.Redtails are great consumers of road pizza.
