Doctor Still (Thompson Place)

I just finished reading forgotten towns for the 100th time,and i noticed on page 37 of the doctor of the pines chapter that it says that Dr.Still's family moved from Indian Mills to Thompson Place(not Guy's house:D ) about a mile away(in Beck's words),i cannot find it on any maps,any indication to where it is?

No doubt it is probably one of the places he moved to,but in the forgotten towns chapter it says the family first moved to thompson place for a short time(about a mile away from indian mills),then to cato's place,no mention how far away that was from indian mills.

That was a different time when area's where known by the one family that lived there. Doesn't happen that way anymore unfortunately. There are very few area's where just one family lives.

It depends on the year you want. The 1858 map I found on the Library of Congress website shows them I believe. You may want a newer map though.

Come to think of it, the historical marker in Medford is for Dr. Stills office. Perhaps that is different from his house? There might be some more info about his history on that sign.

Just a thought - Scott's Atlas of Burlington County (1876) show a S. Still Hr. (Heirs?) residence and a G. Thompson residence at the same intersection in Shamong Township. This is the current Stokes Road/Grassy Lake intersection that is probably 1-2 miles from "downtown" Indian Mills. By this time, Dr. Still had a home and office at CrossRoads in Medford but perhaps some of his family remained in Indian Mills when he moved to Medford. Interestingly, the atlas shows a G. Thompson as a nearby neighbor to Dr. Still in Medford as well.

In writing this, it just occured to me that Stokes Road (in Shamong) is Rt 541 and Dr. Still's office at Cross Roads (in Medford) is on (or just off of) 541. Weird.

:D Aha,so you did know Dr. Still,that was your place where he lived,then could you let us in on some of his herbal cures for the ailments that afflict humankind,so we could all save $$$$ on the high cost of prescription drugs.Especially his cure for cancer, which the drug industry would go bankrupt if we ever found out.

If you have the opportunity, take a look at the lithographic print of Dr. Still's house and office in the Scott 1876 Combination Atlas Map of Burlington County and you will see that he had a separate office and house. The house, a Second Empire-style dwelling with a Mansard roof, met its demise in the mid-1930s.
