Dudley Hole and other info

Between being sick, the snow, and work, I have not been out in the barrens much as of late. However, I have still been acquiring some info that you may find interesting. I will start with something a little obscure. I was recently looking over some info summarizing the Wharton Ledgers, and there was a mention of Dudley's Hole near Atsion. The date was around 1797 and there was a comment next to it from the father of someone a few of us know, wondering where Dudley's Hole was. While looking through some info I have I discovered there was a Dudley Hole Tract and I actually have been able to come up with the exact location of it. Even though the text said it was near Atsion, it actually was deep in the woods off of Atsion Road near the West Jersey Cranberry Meadow.

Here is the mention of it in the survey I found.

And here is the location. The power lines cut the tract right in half. These are the power line you see crossing Atsion Road close to Medford, and they also cross right next to Atco Dragway. PBX was in that general location when you may remember the photo of us killing Pinelandpaddler

PBX in the area.

I will post later on info I found on Ace Campground. The Ace fans may find that quite interesting.

The problem is that place is not on the property my survey shows. Try this. Go to this link and you will see the pointer is to the east of the hole. Then switch to the topo and the rectangular area is Dudley Hole. You can see it is not on the property.

very interesting, Guy. As I recall, that whole area was very swampy, that was near that old stone wasn't Guy? If you remember, to the east of the power lines there was a very old cord road in the gum swamp. Mickey and I noticed it, I am not sure we shared that with you all.

It is indeed an interesting find! Hole was often used to describe closed basins. Its description is not necessarily singular but may actually designate a collection of intermittent ponds. For example the Vanaman Thick ‘N Hole tract in New Italy contained over 300 spungs.

Are there other small basins in the Dudley Hole tract area? Their traces may be today very difficult to distinguish since some may have dried up during historic times. It would be interesting to see if the dark patches seen on the 1931 aerial photomosaics match up to basin forms.
