I was all ready to post here and label this little fellow as a Big Brown Bat, after seeing one after another, over and over again. Seeing this one was a special treat, especially since this one wasn't flying around half scared to death while trapped in my basement. Since this little one was sleeping, (and what heavy sleepers they are!) I was able to get my lens right up to the critter and take some great shots. After sneaking in a few quick curious pets I left quietly without waking her. Naturally, she was gone at sunset.
A few key identifying features of the Red Bat includes its tendency to sleep with only one foot on the branch; a behavior which is assumed to be an attempt at mimicking a hanging dead leaf. Naturally, it would have worked if she wasn't hanging at face level right in the middle of the path. A few more steps and my father might have had fur in his mouth.
Hi there.
Notice the 1 foot hang.
That's it. You can visit my animals album on this site for higher resolution versions of these photos.
