I saw this at the beginning of our paddle today. I go there often and have never noticed it. Did anyone know her?

Ed,

That was found by I believe Bob on an outing a few years back hidden in the brush at Evans Bridge. I thought it had been stolen from a cemetery and tried to find out who it was. I was able to find out the woman was buried at the Hope Church in Lakewood and contacted the church. They contacted the relatives of the woman who contacted me. Here is their response.

Dear Sir; The Hope Church hand carried your e-mail and brought it to my attention-- I am aware of the stone and its location--it memorializes my sister who ran a local canoe business for 20 years and the patrons and local piney's knew her well-- it has been there for over 5 years--It is my understanding that you are trying to return it to a cemetery.. It is not stolen and I thank you for your concern-- it was her and her daughters request to have a service there and place a reminder of her time spent in the barrens..Thank you again and feel free to contact me with any further questions-- the church has no involvement in this issue. sincerely John Klusman

Yes, that is the stone I found on our Wading River Big Trip. Guy had contacted someone who knew about it. I found it tumbled over in the brush.

To be more exact Bob, you found that the day before when we were doing the water drop for that hike, and I asked you not to take the group by the stone until I could figure out who she was. Why I asked that is a mystery. :bang: In any event, the group did not see it.

Apparently someone else found it and decided to move it. Perhaps the family should be notified of its new location?

Bob did take us to it on the Big Trip. I remembered that as soon as I saw the current picture.
We spent a few minutes around the bridge before malikng the final push to the camp.

Yea, we stood there along the road knowing the stone was there. I don't know what I was thinking. Oh well!

I even kinda remember that Bob had a small Thermos of coffee stashed near the bridge and I thought it was weird to drink coffee after a long hike in warm weather. Especially with cold beers nestled snugly on ice in coolers less than a mile away.
I am thinking of another time ???

I just came across this forum. Dian was my mom. She LOVED the Pine Barrens so much. I haven't been back down to Wharton Forest in a while, even though I live so close! I think I'll take a drive and see where it rests currently. Pineywoman, if you want any information, I'd be glad to correspond.
