Ever run into the "trouble" in the pines?

In the post about the Forked River Mountains Guy and Gerania mentioned camping and encountering people who may or may not have been unsavory characters. Has anyone ever had trouble with anyone else out there? Whenever I'm riding around out there and I see a car just sitting or a person milling around I always have to wonder for two reasons. One, since the pines are a relatively impenetrable area in some places, yet they are adjacent to heavily populated suburban and in a few cases urban areas, they make an ideal place for someone to do something they don't want others to know about. Two, with the increase in gang activity in places like Trenton, Camden, Atlantic City, and Pemberton I often wonder just who is passing through the pines going from place to place.

I have seen some various "things" being done between two people in the Pine Barrens, if you catch my drift.

I have heard many, many stories of what the Haines's have caught people doing out in their property.

We caught some kids doing some illegal camping. They came out of their nest and pretty much surrounded us while we were looking for a geocache. I was rattled at first, but when they realized we weren't cops, they just gabbed a little with us and wandered back to their camp.
We ran into some scary-ish people at the Brooksbrae brickworks, but they were just partying pineys, not gangsters.
Never ran into anyone doing the deed. Seems everyone else has though! I feel so left out.

Have met some persons and seen some things over the years that have been somewhat disturbing. It seems that remoteness attracts this.
As far as people gettin' friendly, intimate like, Too many times to list but heck, to each his/her own.

Usually I just see hunters. Sometimes I come across groups of kids, and for whatever reason I guess I intimidate them, because they usually leave. When I did my site camping trip a few months back, there were 2 kids camping out in Hermann City; sounded like they ran away or were otherwise hiding from their parents.
One time there was a kid throwing rocks at the Pioneer factory and I scared him away. While not in the Pines, another time I caught 2 people humping on the Confederate memorial at Finns Point. Yelled at them too.
At least she was hot.

I generally don't worry about 'scary piney people' because chances are I'm related to them.

Most of the time I don't run into people at all in the piney woods. But here on Long Island, in some of the pine barrens in the western part of Suffolk (Edgewood, Connetquot) large groups of 5 or more ATV's are often seen. They can startle you, and often speed at you as you are walking on the sand roads. ATV's are illegal on the state owned lands here, but little seems to be done to stop them.
The other problem we have is illegal aliens living in the woods here. I have seen it from the train while passing through the large tracts of piney woods in Hampton Bays/Quogue. There's usually a bunch of guys with a tent and litter all over the place, usually tequila bottles. They usually pop up near home construction sites.
After many years there was a large group of illegal aliens living in the woods in Farmingville, on privately owned land. It took a long time to get the owner to finally tresspass them from the property. All I know is if I'm walking in the woods the last thing I want to deal with is a beligerant drunk guy who cannot understand a word of english.
At least over in NJ you got some pineys who would probably chase the illegals away with a shutgun.:guinness:

ask being a "kid" at a time, and knowing pineys, the pines is still about judgement of situations. As kids we used to mess with people, because we knew they were easily messed with, like locals at Caranza, or some idiot in a Honda on South Park looking for the new place for street racing. As for piney's, i never met a piney, or an area living land person who was in anyway into doing wrong to people, they might seem that way, but they are not. Strangerish people in the area are a concern, as with "camden type ATV riders", or with anyone you feel out of place, avoid them with any cost, even running over the ATVS, or whatever, just get away. As most people here you sort of understand who is ok in the pine area, and who is not, when you feel unsafe, just get out of there, because even one bad seed encounter could be your last, be safe first, trusting later. This isnt even the suburbs, or city, when something bad happens, the tree's dont call the police, i suggest a more safe then sorry approach to areas with people when people are not a normal presence to be there.
