All,

Since we are no longer able to take off together to explore the pines as we have done in the past, Rob from work and myself took advantage of a plant shutdown to head out today to do just that. Our goals were pretty basic, and that was to find a few stones. Unfortunately, we went 0 for 3 today and struck out. We started our day at 6:30 and headed to the swamps south of the Beaver Dam Bogs. After a few hours of seaching we came upon this. I was waiting for the eyes to blink and then come after us.

It does not look like much but this was quite nice inside. The creature comforts were pleasing to the eye and there was something in it I have never seen before in one of these.

Was that what I think it is? Yes it is!

I always try to leave things the way I found them but I could not pass it up when Rob told me what we had to do. It was then that I picked up the dollar, moved it to the other side, and left a quarter and two pennies with the dollar for him to ponder. I like to leave places better than when I found them :)

Our final stop was an interesting thing that bobpbx noticed as well as I did on the 2014 aerials. Not far off of route 70 in a cedar swamp is what looks like a massive blowdown. Here is the timeline on the aerials.

We see that one month later it was showing.

And more recent.

Until I came home tonight and looked more closely at the aerials, I would have thought for sure it was a blowdown. However, I am now uncertain what caused this.

Getting close to it.

Then I realized that we still had not arrived at the main location.

The photos really don't show the full extent of this. It is widespread.

I have now come up with a theory and want to run it by you. This hunter in one of the few standing cedars nearby was in his stand, took a shot at a deer, and either the bullet, or the sound, or the deer hitting a tree caused one tree after another to start falling. This is causing a domino effect that still is going on today. Eventually, all of the cedars in that swamp will fall except of course the hunters tree. :)

The location in the event you want to visit. Actually, not really hard to get to and there is a little history in the area if you know what to look for or stumble in the ditch. Oops.... spoiler alert!

I hope you enjoyed a portion of our day! It is always interesting exploring with Rob from work.

It must have been all the big rack bucks in the area pushing the trees over marking their territory?????? Just my theory????? ;)

Not sure of the spelling, deracheo, a downward blast of wind.
Quite a bit of lumber going to waste. To bad a cedar mill isn't allowed to harvest.

Hunters box is cool. Great amount of work painting the camo, really good.
Nice table. Far from a road packing all this in?
Your right about the "eyes" blinking and a chase ensuing. LOL

It is pretty far from a road so they worked hard getting it there.

BTW, the state now knows about the cedar if they didn't already but I don't know if anything will happen there. It is not easy to get a vehicle there. They would have to make a road to it.
