Jessica and I headed to the Quarter Mile area early this morning and spent a few hours exploring. On the tracks Jessica spotted this ribbon snake.

Very curious until Jessica tried to pick it up, then not so much. The white marking in front of the eye distinguishes it.

Quarter Mill is looking good. Not growing back as fast as if it had burned, but still doing well.

Not a plant expert but around an old campfire there may be Phragmites????

On the way back along High Crossing Road we had to bypass this puddle.

The bypass had some deep spots and here is Jessica making sure she did not go over her boots.

Where exactly is Quarter Mile? That's a name I'm not familiar with

It would be nice if they are cattails but my gut tells me phrag.

It sure looks like Phragmites to me too, which arrived here in western Atlantic County over the last decade. The foothold seems to be power-line right-of-ways where service roads are crossed. My hunch is that seeds might be hitch-hiking on maintenance equipment. Twenty years ago Phragmites stands popped up seemingly overnight when a half-century-old stand of American holly were removed in a right-of-way in Broad Neck woods east of Elmer.
