All,

With high hopes Bobpbx and I went searching for a particular plant that we had hoped was in an area that we reported on in a previous post. After meeting at his house we proceeded to the location and entered the woods. It really is an amazing place, but one that can be quite dangerous. There are pools of water filled with algae that with one misstep you will disappear completely.

One example of this is shown in the next few photo’s. Using the stick Bob would attempt to touch the bottom which is by the way sand.

And if you fell in the outcome is obvious.

The area is loaded with White Fringed Orchid’s, some quite tall.

After a few hours there we traveled over to Lacey road where the bridge crosses the Cedar Creek. If you have traveled Lacey road before you may not know that hidden just off the side of the road are the remains of the bed for the Tuckerton Railroad. You can actually walk down it quite easily. And just off the side of the present bridge on Lacey road are the remains of the foundations of the actual bridge for the Railroad. Decaying and in places unstable, only one complete piling remains and that will soon fade into history. Most likely built in 1870, it is amazing that 137 years later it still is there.

The one remaining piling with the present Lacey road bridge in the background. I wonder what that will look like in 137 years?

It wobbles when pushed.

This appears to be one of the hooks used to lower the beams in place. One must be careful not to catch it with their boot as I did.

A good view of all the pilings.

And on my way home down 70 near Whiting, I noticed this along the road. It is a dedication to a Manchester Township Police Officer who made the ultimate sacrifice apparently at that location.

That is so awesome. Really nice pictures. It is fascinating how deep these pools can be. I havnt gotten the privilege to see one first hand but I prolly will come across one in the future, especially if I start exploring with you guys. The orchids are so beautiful. What are those ones, about chest hight? Man the Pines are an amazing place. Id like to thank my beautiful fiance for bringing me to the state of New Jersey. If I had never met her, I would have never come to NJ, never experienced the Pine Barrens, and never have met all you wonder folks. Great trip report Guy.

I believe we stumbled across this location or a very similar one. Unfortunately, it was March. Brrr! I don't know why we had the sense to be careful and poke at the pools to see how deep they were, but we did. Oy.

Nice photos, those orchids are magnificent.

Very Nice! Hey, kind of reminds me of the spaghnum swamps along mount misery brook south of 70. Remember? That old rail bridge is very cool! I did not know it was there. There is something very romantic about some forsaken remnant of history rotting away along a lonely creek.

Thanks for the great photos Guy.

On 8/1/2004 a bunch of us from PBX that included Behr655, Lorun, Bob, and me canoed up the Cedar Creek from Dover Forge. It was pouring rain and the water was really flowing down as we were heading up. It was hot and steamy and my glasses were so fogged up the day was just a blur. We canoed right past the foundations for the trestle and Bob asked me as we passed if I could guess what they were. So today I finally got to see it with glasses that were clear.

Here is a photo from 3 years ago of the flow that we were fighting to get upstream. If you look closely you can see a small boat we found that looks like it has been there for years.

Very nice Bob. Thanks.

Now what does everyone think happened when I jumped back to the other beam? Hmmm. Lets just say when I got home my wife made me change my pants before I sat down to eat. Didn't want the chair ruined.

PS: Guy, the police officer was jogging on the side of Lacey Road. A guy in a car hit him; said that he had bent down to pick something up off the floor or that the sun was in his eyes (I forget which).

A tragedy.

Nice report Guy(s). I really dug the psychadelic orchid. The old trestle is a neat. I can just imagine the serenity of the swampy area. I love those kinds of places.

While this is a little more touristy, I am taking my four year old daughter camping and canoeing on the wading river in a couple of weeks. It will be the first time she has been in the pines. I hope I am not dragging the canoe most of the way.

What is the water table like...anybody know?

Looks like it is heading below the mean Tom:

Check your little sweetheart often for chiggers on her little legs. In 2 weeks they will really start stirring about.
