There were 2 gravel pits operated by Buzby Brothers that were excavated by dredge in the town where I grew up. They pulled a lot of petrified wood out of those.
My father brought some home when I was little and I remember taking it to school for show and tell. I think some was donated to the Academy of Natural Sciences in Philly too.
It looked like beige slate and you could flake it apart with your fingers.
Nothing like the parent wood material.
Lots of cool stuff in the bottom of those pits.
If urban legend holds true, there is a crane or a dump truck at the bottom of every one. Usually with the operator still in it. Spooky.
