FINALLY out in the Pines!

Sorry, but this will be a long one. I found this post when I did a yahoo search for Pioneer Smelting. I was there about 5 years ago and wandering through the factory before it was torn down. I know I have photos of it, but I was switching to digital then and never developed some of my old film. I even got chased out by the EPA when they were doing their cleanup! Anyway, I just got my first 4wd after having sportscars all my life and I'm diving into the pines. I've always loved all the stories and legends and researching the old towns. I've read the Forgotten Towns books so many times. So if you're out there and see a blue Blazer with my dog spotting deer out the window, that's me. I'll be searching out the old towns and shooting photos. Anybody has some real cool sites to find ruins, give me a general idea. I'll use my maps and GPS to find the dead-on spot. By the way, I gotta say, the guy named Guy - you know your stuff! You ever see me out there, please flag me down!

I will look for the Blazer with the dog :)

You will know it's me when you see the NJPineBarrens.com sticker in the back window of my white Ford Focus. I use a car and then walk. You see and find so much more.

Believe me, I plan on doing some walking! Starting with as much of the CJRR as I can.

As Largo asked, what section first? I may be able to point out a few things to look for if you tell us.

I've walked from downtown Chatsworth out to 72, explored all around Atsion Lake, and spent a load of time at Winslow Junction. I'd love to start at Atsion and work out to Carranza. I want to find the trestles across the rivers and try to find the locations of the mail stops. I really liked a spot I was at with my friends' Jeeps where there was a pretty steep cross over the tracks. For lack of anything better to call it, I called it the plains, since it was more barren and open than the forest. Don't think there's much out there though.

I think I know the area you are referring to. It is wet and still recovering from a fire sometime ago(hence the barren landscape). Is it near Hampton furnance? Near high crossing? I wouldn't call it the plains though, so as not to confuse it with the route 72/539 plains. That is a very wild area in there. Lots of wild life.

That sounds like the spot, it is out near Hampton. I tried driving out there myself one day, but being alone, and the road gets trickier on the way out, I decided to turn around. We came in from the road from Quaker Bridge the first time I was there which seemed easier. I haven't really stretched out my 4 wheel drive legs yet!

That's the spot, I've got it marked on my Google Maps as well.
