You must watch the first video for sure. This is in the Parker Preserve. They have invented a camera that can be in a fire and you can see what it is like as the fire comes at you.

It is amazing to see how windy it gets right before the fire arrives at the camera and how quickly it passes it

And that was a controlled fire. Imagine the heat on that windy day of the big fire this year. I was out there yesterday. The regeneration is well underway.

Does anyone know what these brown dragon flies are named? I did not have the patience to get a good photo. They were very abundant along the stream, fighting each other and zooming around. And only this one specie. What was great was there were no pine flies. I assume the fire destroyed their eggs. Much of the sphagnum was burned at the edge of the swamp.

Very often, the seeds of the new pine that exploded off the heated cones is still attached to the young plant.

You may be right Al. The only thing bothering me is the "bright orange" part. I would lean towards brown.

Could it be the Whitetail Skimmer? I can't see the tail in your photo but it does have wing bars

Speaking of flies, how are Pine flies, Deer flies, Black flies and Strawberry flies related? I think Pine flies and Deer flies are the same species but I am not sure about Strawberry flies.

No, I think your first suggestion is correct Al after I've thought about it. I'm possibly going back to that area tomorrow to see if I can get in from the other side. Join me if interested. Here on the upper Plains Branch.

According to Howard Boyd, deer flies are Chrysops delicatulus, and my money says they are also called pine flies locally. I don't know the strawberry fly. I know the deer fly unfortunately.
