GALLOWAY TOWNSHIP - Two local fishermen discovered the badly decomposed remains of a human body Monday while fishing near Hoffman's Point.

Sgt. Ed Keebler, of the State Marine Police in Atlantic City, said the fishermen found the remains in Betsey's Channel, within the Edwin B. Forsythe National Wildlife Refuge Area.

Police could not identify the body Monday and spent the rest of the day poring over missing person's reports.

Keebler could not say for sure if the body was male or female.

"I'm not a medical examiner, but I can pretty definitely say that it was not a body of a child," he said.

State Police were called to the area just after 2 p.m. Monday.

Police turned over the remains to the county medical examiner. An autopsy is scheduled for 10 a.m. today.

Hoffman's Point is a well-known fishing location.

Hunters sometimes travel along Betsey's Channel to access areas where migratory birds are plentiful, said Steve Atzert, manager of the national wildlife area.

Most channels in Forsythe are not deep, Atzert said, but he could not say for sure the depth of Betsey's Channel when he was reached at home Monday.
