Rarely seen in the pines as they are secretive and nocturnal. This one got chased up my neighbors trampoline. I did a red-eye correction.

I also only recently learned this in a conversation with a local fellow who found a couple dead ones on his property. He could not figure out just what they were as they were built kinda funny. Especially the flat tail really had him wondering. Then, by coincidence he saw them on a nature show, looked them up online and sure enough....

Some years back we had one get in through our chimney. Kept seeing something out of the corner of my eye, but not finding anything when I looked. I finally saw it glide from atop the window curtin to a chair! Released without further instance. Sweet little critter. Big eyes like in your pics.
It is nice you were able to capture a photo of it. Years ago I had one go right by my head while walking up to a friends front door in Tabernacle. It jumped off the roof and landed on a little tree behind me. It was dark so I did not get a good look at it.

When I bought my previous house in Medford, the owner said they enjoyed watching the flying squirrels in the woods out back. For the three years I lived there I saw lots of squirrels jumping from tree to tree, but they just looked like regular ones to me.

Cleaning out a bird house in the yard one fall, it looked empty, little sucker came out the hole, down my arm, off my shoulder and glided over to a tree. I fell off the ladder, nearly had a heart attack-ack-ack

49er, your quote hit it on the head about socialism vs liberalism. My wife and I just came back from 3 weeks in Italy where they are socialist. I spent a couple of days with relatives and they have what they need to live and they are comfortable and live well, but they don't have money to travel or have the discretionary cash that we have in a capitalist society. Yes, we are going that way in the form of liberalism. Thanks for putting it in perspective.

I saw one years ago Back in the chatsworth area but didn't realize what it was until I talked with a buddy at work . I thought it was a very chunky squirrel
Rocky was a Flying Squirrel!
Come on you guys, you never saw one before?! My first flying squirrel was seen on the Rocky and Bullwinkle Show!!!! All kidding aside, when I lived in Malaga, I was in the living room and could hear something coming up the handrail in the stairwell leading to the basement. I opened the door and there was Rocky coming up the handrail and then quickly down. I got my fishing net and caught him. He was really cute, like the pic. I let him go out back and he ran to a rain-puddle and drank for a minute. He must have been down there for some time. Also, here in Florida, I have birdhouses and like an earlier post I lifted up a house to clean it and out came 2 Rocky's. I freaked! By the way, they are a favorite maincourse for barred owls.:ham:

What a cutiepie! How cordial of him to pose for you like that. They are apparently quite common in NJ, almost as much so as the gray squirrel, but their arboreal nature makes them very hard to spot. I have seen them in the pines, deep in a cedar swamp, flying between canopies.

I've been aware that they are native to pines but I have never seen one. I am always on the look out. Thanks for posting that shot Bob.

Cute little guy. I have some that live in my back yard. Sometimes when I am out by my fire pit at night I will catch a quick glimpse of one.
I used to rent a house on a few acres in Brick, NJ (hard to believe theres some land in Brick) and we had them in the yard quite often. We'd mostly see them at dusk while on the back deck. Pretty sure some of them lived in our walls too. Great photos. Never saw them so close up before.
I had a nest in the the fire tower I used to work in, they drove me nuts! At first I thought they were bats. I drilled a hole in the wooden ceiling and put a light up there, but it didn't work. I put up with it for months until one hot summer day after being up there for weeks without a day off the critters peed on my sandwich through a crack in the ceiling.
