All,

I scanned up two pages of the 1974 National Geographic article written by John McPhee for someone, so I decided to post it here for those of you who have not read it. Again, this is only two pages of a much larger article. It shows Fred Brown and he discusses John Bower and other individuals. If you enjoy it and want it, it currently is on eBay for a total cost if you are the only bidder of about $5.00.

The scanned article. I scanned it in two pieces and merged it so there is a minor seam.

Pines; Bamber area
He was "in" by Beaver Run that "comes out of the Plains".....

I love it. I talk to myself sometimes like that. Tonite I was thinking of Oyster Creek...."I gotta get down in there soon"...I said to myself as I zoomed North along the Parkway.

Darn it; I was going to partake in the eBay auction for the mags and forgot about it. The bidding has expired.

As an aside, McPhee has a published article in the current issue of The New Yorker (9/3/07); the story doesn't mention the pines, but might be of interest to those who love wild places and/or have foraged for wild foods. This is part of an essay that deals with all the unusual foods McPhee has ingested throughout his years. He also hilariously writes concerning his disappointment of never having seen a rattlesnake in the wild, though having often visited areas supposedly infested with them. (However, the snake does appear on his culinary "life list").

John McPhee gets my vote as the most gifted writer gracing the planet.

I'd be careful having the scanned article online.

Ok. I will remove it. I was thinking it brings attention to their magazine especially since it is almost 30 years old.

Well, it could either do that or get me sued for copyright infringement. :(

I don't want that!

It seems to me that people selling it on ebay and making money off of it that the magazine will never see is stealing, when I am just informing people of the article by giving them a small portion of it, and recommending to them to purchase it. Now maybe I am encouraging sales on ebay, but if the magazine sold copies then I might be making them money.

Striclty speaking NG still owns that copyright, and it covers the right to display the work, so you would be infringing. The people selling the magazines on eBay have specific rights to do that under copyright law, as long as what they are selling is an original authorized version of the work.

Practically speaking I doubt strongly that a site like this would ever have a problem with NG from displaying a scanned article. The worst that would happen is an email from an attourney, followed by the removal of the offending picture, and that's the end of it. That would only happen if, for example, NG has its own archive of scanned back issues and doesn't want you competing (if they did you could just like to theirs and be done with it.)

Corporations don't sue people unless those people can't reach agreement with their lawyers. In this case, since you make little or no money from displaying that scan, they would just want you to take it down.
