He only deleted the one video. All of his other associated videos were from the same day with the same group of vehicles.

Many times I've thought/said how surprising it is that such places are not more carefully preserved and marked by the state as historic sites or something to that effect..................Being a native Washingtonian(DC) and seeing how everything 'historic' down there is signed as such, all the fascinating places like friendship with it's intact foundations struck me as equally worthy of such treatment.................................................................I think there's a way to do it that won't detract from a places aura but would certainly help discourage such vandalism and destruction-maybe make doing so at desiganted places subject to significantly stiffer penalties/fines,whatever....

It's a difficult question. They can't preserve everything, so they establish museums and preserve some locations, like Batsto and Atsion mansion, and the rest of what happens to be out there is left to moulder. It makes me sad, but it is so much more the rule than the exception, over history, that it would be childish I guess for me to expect anything different.

The problem is even if they place signs there people destroy them. How many times do you put the sign up before you up? They can't be everywhere all the time and vandals know that.

Friendship is a unique and interesting place. A member of this site who is my age actually lived there and has many photo's of the place. She gave me a tour there one day. It is a shame that it is being destroyed like it is.

How do you save a YOUTUBE video?

In addition to the things mentioned above.... I use Real Player as my default, so when I hover my cursor over the video a box appears asking if I want to "Save this video to Real Player?".

It will save just about any internet video....

Guy,
This is one of the few reasons why we formed NJTLC. Locations like this that may eventually get a sign of some sort, we would continue to make sure that one stays up, even if it was torn down daily. Some of us are out there almost on a daily basis and could keep up with it. We are also eventually going to havew funding where we could make up informational signs or whatever. One of the projects I suggested to the group was to see if we'd be allowed to dig out the dirt ramps that lead in and out of the foundation. Noone is purposley going to drive off a 7-8 foot wall.
Contarary to some beliefs I believe signs will HELP slow down destruction to these places. Nothing will ever completely STOP the destruction of historical or environmentally senstive areas. If we can slow it down i believe we are obn the right path. The reason why i believe signs will help slow it down is that alot of people have absolutely no knowledge of history and look at some of these areas as nothing more than rubble and possibly even litter. If there is a nice sign placed with historical info on the area I believe many people would be educated on the area to the point of not wanting to destroy it. There will still be the few people that will run over the sign or burn it or graffiti it, but if it stops one group of 5 vehicles from driving in it, we are on the right path.
I believe education is a key factor in slowing down destruction. I look at myself a few years back, I would have driven right into that foundation, and on the way home I would have driven into a untouched spung (not even knowing of the word spung at the time). Thanks to ageing I eventually didn't have as much of a desire to destroy these types of areas. My big and I mean HUGE changing key was this site and the EDUCATION that I gained. Ben, Jerseyman, Largo, Mark, James, and yourself, Guy provided me with knowledge of an area that I grew up in and made something click, that I was born and raised and reside in area unlike any other and put a complete stop to my carelessness. Without knowing, you guys have prevented further destruction at some areas just by sharing your knowledge and educating a person that was once on the "outlaw" side. That same person, myself, has spread what I have gained to others and have change dthere points of view tremendously. So either way keep up the good work and take pride in your stewardship.

Dave,

As for the signs, I am hoping you prove me dead wrong but I have my doubts that signs will cure all. There have been many sings all over the pines over the years, from the wooden one at Martha I photographed in 1973 with "Jive" written across it, to the informations sign about the Pinelands National Reserve on Apple Pie Hill that is no longer there because of vandalism. It did not stop the televisions from flying off the tower there, and I am sorry to say it will not stop the destruction at Friendship. You know the person who made that video at Friendship knew it was wrong, and if they could have driven across a sign they would have done that too.

The is just another example of the attitudes, lack of common sense and total disrespect of property and person from this generation of people. Do I paint this picture with a broad brush in making thing statement? Sure I do. It's a sad fact of the times. People are not like they were 25-30 years ago. A lack of a sign, fence or border should not give anyone an open invitation to cause havoc and destruction. This is just a matter of lack of common sense and not caring.

Well, apparently you don't like it that I admit I was wrong in my opinion of someone, so I have removed it to keep everyone happy.

Vandalism in the pines is nothing new; certainly not peculiar to my generation.

I have no problem with your admission, its the apparent manner with which you reached it that bothered me. Sounded more like an exclusive club vote than a friendly forum. Sorry if I'm wrong, but that's how it came across after one cup of coffee; perhaps I should have had a second.
