All,

We started the day looking for any remains of the “Flemens” residence listed on the 1858 Burlington County map I found on the Library of Congress website. It was located just off of Carranza road where Hampton Gate was reported to be. In just a few minutes of searching Jessica found what very well could be the location. Scattered all around were semi large stones along with many bricks, so it is not just pieces from the stone hill nearby. It is about right where the map shows it. There was no evidence of a cellar hole, just bricks and stone and maybe an underground wall that I did not dig around.

We explored somewhat across Carranza road for remains of the hotel, but with little time the briers kept me somewhat at bay. Another exploration is needed. And there is a possibility that the road that heads south into the woods there was the road to Hampton Furnace from Hampton Gate. It goes right by the “Flemens” house and matches up with the map pretty close.

From there we headed over to Quaker Bridge road via Hampton Furnace driving past a thousand bikers for the large rally going on. I spent most of the time pulling to the side of the dirt road to let them past. We headed to Quaker Bridge road to look for some stones for the Fruitland development. One of the property corners is about 40 feet off of Quaker Bridge road, and I did not expect the stone to still be there. But to my surprise history is hanging tough. It actually is a nice size one.

The next corner was close to the Sewell shooting range. It was much smaller and at ground level. I had to dig around to find it.

Kingofthepines..........the gate is now closed.

And our final stop was to make a “Then & Now” photo using Nate Ewing’s photo. Here is the Richards grave at Pleasant Mills.

That Then & Now is probably the only one you've done where it looks better now than in the past.
You had a beautiful day to be exploring the Pines.

Steve

True! My photo is somewhat poor though. It would have been better if it was a cloudy day. I think I am going to go back again and move over to the right and down somewhat to align it better.

It was a nice day. Carranza road was the busiest I have ever experienced. Vehicle's going by every minute for the rally.

I also went to Rockwood and explored a little. The road was flooded and had a stream flowing across it. The beavers must really be working overtime, since most of the woods seemed pretty dry to me except there.

I also noticed for the first time the new sign at the Carranza boot camp. I have not been there in a while to see it.

I stopped in at Hampton Furnace and drove around the ruins there, and it is appalling how much has been removed just since I took the photo with Jessica standing in it for my "Then & Now" photo. So the next time I go there I will make a "Then, & Now & Now".

The wall on the right in this photo with Jessica is almost complelty gone.

In my lifetime I can guarantee that it will be completly gone.

Good finds, I was out there yesterday for about an hour looking around. I've found stones also, most of them covered in thick moss. I will do more searching next weekend. 150+ years can really take thier toll. That 1859 map that Guy posted has alot of great information on it. I also noticed that in the Pasadena area on it there is a building with the name Clevenger. I am guessing that this was the home of Peggy? Makes sense. Great find, keep up the good work.

I have at least one other map that shows the P. Clevenger residence, with one giving a more exact location of it. As I have mentioned before, it is mentioned in the survey of the Hanover Furnace tract since it goes right by the house.

I haven't been there in ages, I always miss the turn. However, didn't they lay a layer of cement on top of the walls to keep people from walking off with stones from the wall?
