Cool article, may be a few errors though, like the Civil War photo captions, some look Revolutionary War period to me, some appear to be Civil War era

Also, the steam tractor can be seen operating yearly at Fleming's Pumpkin run. It's impressive to see the chain-linkage steering.

Not for real, although the History channel had a show "History of the Truck" it was the first one they showcased. The one Mack has still worked and they were driving it down the road and talking about how powerful it was.
I had a calendar of antique heavy trucks and it had a photo of a chain driven Sterling. Cool stuff.
Ford owns that name now.

Why were they made? My first reaction is sand in the chain, and "a chain is only as strong as it's weakest link". Seems like an idea that was later found to be unworkable.
My Uncle Jimmy (mom's brother-in-law) was a heavy truck mechanic for 40 years or so. He worked at a couple places up on route 1 near New Brunswick and Metuchen. I'm going to ask him next time he calls. He's 88 now and has a great memory.
I'm guessing they were made as just another take on a drive line model. Check the pic of the chain, I don't think the links were weak, but I'm sure there were failures
