I just noticed on my Vantage Point Base Map that the Garden State Parkway is listed as Interstate 444.Did the government buy the road from it's private owners and change the name to route 444? Google Maps still lists it as the Parkway.

I have seen that on old Garmin maps also. Just looked and I don't see it on the newer maps. But I think it was "Route 444" and not "Interstate 444". I think North-South Interstate Highways have odd numbers while East-West roads are even numbered?

I-444 is in Oklahoma. It is classified as a state highway, originally NJ-4 in the history of the GSP.

"PLANNING THE PARKWAY: In 1945, the New Jersey State Legislature passed legislation enabling construction of the 164-mile-long NJ 4 Parkway. The parkway, which was to connect northern New Jersey with resort areas on the Atlantic coast, was proposed in response to growing congestion on major north-south routes such as US 1, US 9 and NJ 35."

The symbol on vantage point map was an interstate symbol like on 95.

A mistake on Magellan's map software? Say it ain't so! :p

I have been working with NJDOT's official road data recently. This is what it looks like for a section of the Garden State Parkway, FWIW. The SRI attribute refers to the NJDOT Standard Route Identification system as explained below. The attributes SRI=00000444_S and ROUTE_SUBT=4 indicate that the section I have selected is Southbound Toll Authority road number 444.

Magellan probably made the mistake of assuming that this is an interstate because the MM and CC codes are zero. However the ROUTE_SUBT code of 4 indicates that it's a Toll Authority Road.

So this got me thinking.... looking at the NJDOT data, here's some other trivia for you. The Atlantic City Expressway is rt 446. The Southern part of the NJ Turnpike is rt 700 (it becomes I-95 North of the extension that leads to the PA turnpike). The Palisades Parkway is rt 445.

Does Magellan call these roads Interstate 445, 446 and 700? ;)

How old are your maps? Does it show any copyright info on them? Magellan used Navteq in their automotive products for awhile - same source Garmin uses. Then they switched to Teleatlas - which is owned by TomTom. Topo map data probably came from some other source (such as the Census Bureau TIGER system).

Good luck giving somebody directions... "Take Interstate 700 to Interstate 444 South, then go West on Interstate 446". :clint:

can't find any copyright info for the map, just the software and the GPS Babel that it uses. a very piss poor base map.my topo downloads aren't even working now or for the past three days.Going to get a hold of tech support tomorrow,I think their server may be down.Aerials will load but not topos and they won't load on PC or Laptop so I think it's on their end.30 dollar subscription they need to fix it.

Can't be an interstate. As far as I know, you can't put tolls on an interstate.

That used to be the case, but it was changed. PA Tuurnpike, NY Thruway, NJ Turnpike are part of the Interstate system and toll roads.

From wikipedia;

Approximately 2,900 miles (4,700 km) of toll roads are included in the Interstate Highway System. While federal legislation initially banned the collection of tolls on Interstates, many of the toll roads on the system were either completed or under construction when the Interstate Highway System was established. Since these highways provided logical connections to other parts of the system, they were designated as Interstate highways. Congress also decided that it was too costly to either build toll-free Interstates parallel to these toll roads, or directly repay all the bondholders who financed these facilities and remove the tolls. Thus, these toll roads were grandfathered into the Interstate Highway System.

I guess that would be the part north of where 95 crosses from Pa into Trenton and swings over top and hits the TPK.

From Exit 6 north to it's end is I-95. The area around Trenton has some of the worst signs, you can be headed north on 295, but then signs say your on 95 south :confused:

I always get a puzzled look, from out of towners, when I have to give them directions to the turnpike. It is difficult to explain the 95s. North of Route 1 is 95. South of Route 1 is 295. East of 295 but south of route 1 is 195. West of 295 and south of Route 1 is I29. However if you take 95 south through Philly, eventually it will change to 295 and 495. I think I may right...:confused:
