Thanks, Boyd. Surprisingly in all the Not Valid fine print on the bottom, Garmin GPS - with the exception of "Garmin fitness instruments" - aren't excluded. But even so I don't know if I'm ready to switch to the Montana from my still working Garmin 276C.

Oh, duh. I see now that you posted that a month ago. So how come it only appeared in my email yesterday? I was thinking it was a thanksgiving sale.

Say, Boyd, do you know about using tablets as GPS instead of a dedicated Garmin? I was ogling the Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 that Costco will be selling at $100 off 23-25 Nov. I'm not at all up on this technology, but my little 4.2" Samsung MP3 comes with free mapping and gps, and the big one would have a far larger screen than the Garmin Montana, or the 7" version too ($70 off), as well as being much more versatile. I've only used Garmins for GPS, and I've used them for years, going back to, I think it was the Garmin 2.

I have no experience with Android tablets, but they have the potential to be inexpensive nice large screen gps'es. The first step in checking it would would be to see if there are any apps that you like. I have no idea what's available, Garmin does not have an app for Android although they have an iOS "streetpilot" app that appears kind of limited to me.

I have an HP Slate 500 which is a tablet that runs Windows 7. I can run Garmin nRoute and MobilePC on it and use my Garmin maps. Both of those programs have been discontinued. I also run OziExplorer on it, but you need to make your own maps for that. There is a version of Ozi that also runs on Android.

I wouldn't want to drop a tablet or get it wet. Seems like you are over-thinking all this. For me, the Montana has the perfect combination of features and works well on the trail as well as in the car. You need to make your own decisions based on your needs and budget. I would be surprised to see the Montana sell for less than $400 anytime soon.

Yes, I overthink everything. Trouble is my 276c is still going good and I like it. If it broke it would be different. I'd just as soon not go through the learning process and buy the maps again and the holder and whatever other accessories if I didn't have to quite yet. I need to learn something about the tablet option, too.
