Assemblyman Bill "Baroni of Mercer, Middlesex Counties, is one of several lawmakers who have proposed establishing a program to preserve and mark the graves of Abraham Clark, George Clymer, John Hart, Richard Stockton and John Witherspoon.:jd:

'These five people risked their lives and their fortune to do something historically unprecedented, and that was to declare our independence,' Baroni says. 'The people of New Jersey owe them a debt of gratitude.':jd:

But weather and time have taken a toll on the five graves, and people have forgotten that our country would not exist as we know it if not for them and the 51 other men who signed the Declaration of Independence 230 years ago, Baroni says.

If the proposed legislation passes in the full Assembly and the state Senate, the New Jersey Historical Commission will establish a $200,000 program to preserve and mark the five graves and to promote public awareness about the five signers who are buried here.:jd:

Clymer signed the declaration as a representative from Pennsylvania, but he is buried in Trenton. A fifth signer from New Jersey, Francis Hopkinson, is buried at the Christ Church graveyard in Philadelphia.:..."

Who knows where these graves are located? Does anyone have photos? Would it be possible to locate their sites with GPS and post those great, scalable topographic maps, so we can visualize their locales?

It seems to me that this might be a great summertime project for some of the list members and their children, who might wish to reduce their exposure to deer ticks and the diseases they carry, and still enjoy the summertime pastoral settings of the great outdoors.

Kids are really great "hunters," and this combines the thrill of the hunt, with learning about these great men and what they did for our country (and for us!); and it gives the parents an opportunity to train their children the proper decorum when visiting graveyards, historical sites, museums, etc.

P.S.: Can our resident "Lone Ranger" :D be of any help?
