Another great day in the Pines. Ro & I inventoried plants on one of our botany test sites on the Franklin Parker Preserve, then we met Mark Szutarski and Ann Cavanaugh and identified plants on a section of the Rte 563 shoulder. This evening Ro & I went to Whitesbog, photographing the sunset from the big reservoir dike road. Gorgeous day.

You have to click on the "Upload a File" button and choose the file. Once it uploads you just hit "Post Reply." However, I suspect your file is too big and you may need to make it smaller before uploading.

Glad you got them posted.

Those concrete monuments were placed along the Burlington County (Keith Line) in 1935 by Benjamin Sleeper. They all actually have the date of 1935 on them but it is below ground and some are hard to even see. The one you photographed has been pushed over because as always someone from the FFS or the state got the great idea to make that road there along the line. As recent as 1995 it was not there.

You pass others all the time and don't even realize it. There is one along Route 70 near Whitesbog, one along 206 just south of Atsion, and many other all throughout the pines along the line. Most are in good shape but a few are damaged quite a bit.

Thanks for all the info, Guy.
We'll look for the 70 & 206 markers since we frequent those roads on our botany forays. Maybe we'll figure out the line and Ro and I'll do some tramping....
Incidentally, during our Saturday outing Bill Bolger said his ambition is to walk the Keith line in time to celebrate 350 years of NJ, next year. I wished him well, knowing there's some tough country involved.

The problem with walking it is the fact that much of it is private property. And much of it is not cleared. And what about Ft. Dix? Even if they gave permission to walk it one would need a bulldozer to get through. Practically all of it above Pasadena Road is wild and uncleared which is about 22 miles. Tough even for PBX :)

If Bill sets his sights on Pasadena Road and south, he will encounter a few tough spots and some private land, but going north from there is something he should do alone. Subjecting someone to that with them not really grasping what is ahead of them is unwise. The briers near Whitesbog are unrelenting, and even looking for the one monument there just 20 feet off the dirt road was a struggle. Jessica has pushed through quite a bit of woods over the years and she made the decision to stay put on the road. You would think that 20 feet would be easy but it wasn't. I came back out on the road redder than when I went in.

Guy, many thanks for the first hand info. I'll pass it on to Bill since he gave me his e-mail address.
Do I take it that there are/were 21 stones between the one we saw and the origin at Egg Harbor?
