Terry O'Leary (an excellent teacher), criticized the veracity of McPhee's book at the last Pinelands Short course, but I've read it three times in 40 years, and enjoyed it every time. I was unaware that spendin' Brendan passed his historic legislation after reading "The Pine Barrens" but if that is true, that book has had an undeniable influence on eveyone who loves these woods. It has made me think about just how influential Byrne was, and once again, how important the"Pinelands Protection Act" was.

Upcoming trips on Oct. 12, Nov. 11 and Dec. 17...The highlight, though, is the view from atop the Apple Pie Hill Fire Tower...On the hazy day Volpa took PhillyVoice on the tour, perhaps 15 man-made things – such as water towers and power transmission lines – were visible in a 360-degree rotation.

So is it possible for other groups or individuals to request specific date access to the tower?

Yes. "When the tower is occupied, the public can access the tower based on availability and weather,” Shinske said. “We encourage the public to plan their visits ahead of time by calling the New Jersey Forest Fire Service Division B Headquarters at (609) 726-9010 and scheduling a tour that will include access to the tower.”............from the Pine Barrens Tribune.
