Last week I visited a part of the Pines I'd never seen before.
If it weren't for the helpful guidance of Ed and Guy, I might still be rambling . . .

I shot this in b/w because the austerity of grayscale seemed to fit the old stones.

In the warehouse ruins, this redcedar looked hopeful,
even though surrounded by shards of glass.

We called this the Mogul Track. Fun to drive.

Since I had only a rental Blazer, I thought
I'd better not cross this spill-over from a bog.
Wish you'd been there, Mudboy Dave!

Took a bog-photo instead.

My daughter has an eye for detail.
She took these close-ups.

What are the tiny growths?

We call this princess pine. Does it have another name?

This lay in the charred field near the furnace ruins.

I like the Batsto and the Mullica for canoeing,
but the lovely little Skit has stolen my heart.
I want to see it from a kayak! Anyone know anything about its name?
Thank you, Ed, for the introduction.

BORING?
But that could be construed as an accolade:
Beautiful
Other-worldly
Rare
Intriguing
Native
God-given

Thank you, all, for standing guard.

a village...in the pines
Glo,
Beautiful photos. The plant you ask about is ground pine....or Lycopodium obscurum. It forms a very attractive woodland carpet once it becomes established. Hard to propogate. Glad to see you had a blessed day in the woods. I am due for one soon.....but have been busy.....PLUS my camera has been sent away for two weeks to have warranty repair work. I feel like a kid without a cell phone!

Gloria,

The tiny growth is lichen as far as I can tell. There are many species of it.

I like your definition of boring. It looks like you had a boring time :) I am not sure if many of the members realize you did travel 900 miles last week to visit Hampton Furnace. A chance meeting with Ed, and you mentioning me, and you could not have had a better guide that week. Ed knows that area well.

I am sorry I could not meet up with you, but the next time Jessica and I will make it a point to do just that. Thank you for the thread and the photo's.

Good that you made it up and enjoyed yourselves so!
You brought back a few very serene images. There are folks out there too dense to know such things exist in Jersey. That's fine by me.

Guy is right, that is a lichen.one common name for it is tin soldier lichen because the red top knots are reminiscent of the red top hats on tin soldiers of the old british soldier variety.

ps
an interesting fact is that a liche is a fungi(arguably an animal) and an algae which is a plant. The algae makes clorophyl and hence food from sunlight and the fungi provides support and steals nutrients from dead wood and also minerals from the soil.
I believe a symbiotic relationship it's called. It no doubt must have evolved that way:)

Photo #12 is Ground Pine, Lycopodium obscurum
However.....I like Princess Pine! Never heard that one before.

Thank you, HawkinNative -- and turtle, for your post too. The taxa are always helpful.

Do you know whether there's fishing anywhere along the Skit?
Pickerel?

Nope! No fish in the skit. We must never speak of these things.:argh:

I'm just kidding. I get a little protective, secretive...and perhaps greedy about fishing holes. I will confirm that there are pickerel in the skit but as to size, exact location and numbers; I will keep that info to myself. Of course, a real nice PM can often send you in the right direction if you really want to know.

enjoyed the report, glad you had a nice visit.

It's really exciting when you drag a lure across the waters surface and watch a pickerel attack it from 10 feet away!
