A Real St Patricks Day

As a first generation irish.....my ma was born in kerry.....i deeply resent the american emphasis on drinking on st patricks day.............it has been my observation that it is used as a great excuse to get drunk and act like an idiot by any and all alchoholics,or would be ones.
in ireland of course,it is ,at least in the rural areas,a religious holiday..........now i admit,i do have a drink or two on st patricks but my family and relatives by and large do not treat it as a drunken orgy..........i refuse to purchase any st patricks day cards with reference to drinking and green beer......uggh.....what a horrible american idea.......lets prove to the world,or at least the pine barrens that all us irish are not a bunch of sodden louts..................erin gae brach, strom

Take it east Strom, sit back, have a pint. It is true, we Americans love a good excuse to party. And it's not only St Patrick's Day. In recent years I've noticed that Cinco di Mayo is becoming more and more an occasion to party around here. I think, OK, more Mexicans in the area so more partying. Not so. I recently asked a couple of Mexicans, that were on the same job as me, what Cinco di Mayo was in celebration of. I was told that it was to commemorate the defeat of the French. I was also told that Mexicans do not celebrate it like we do here. They learn about it in school and there are parades but no real partying.
So now I'm thinking, what other countries have holidays that we can throw a party for? Bastille Day? Canadian Thanksgiving? England's Boxing Day? Just give us a reason!!!!

Party on.

Steve
