A few days ago at lunch break, some co-workers and I visited Harleigh Cemetery in Cooper River Park (Camden County). While we’d gone specifically to see Walt Whitman’s grave, I was more fascinated with the monument for William Joyce Sewell (Civil War General), which is an extremely elaborate Celtic tile monument (he was from Ireland originally). There are many graves of politicians and war heroes from the 19th Century, and all in all it is a pretty compelling place to visit. I highly recommend visiting it for those of you that are in this part of New Jersey – I’ve lived right by it for several years now and had no idea how interesting it was!

Even more interesting is the area surrounding Whitman's tomb, where there is knapping debitage from the construction of the monuments, and unfinished monuments.

Someone had left pencils at Whitman’s tomb, presumably so that he could write in the afterlife. I thought that pretty charming. :)

And Beck and Pierce are there also. I posted maps here before and they still may be posted somewhere.

Jerseyman on this site gave a speech at Whitmans grave a few years back.

Yes, I must go back there again -- we had only about 20 minutes to look around as it was in the middle of the work day. Pretty amazing place though!

I may have mentioned this before. My dads mom told my mom years ago that our family has an open lot there and anyone from the family can use it if so desired; however, she is gone, and my dad, and we have no idea if that is still true. We looked around at some of the Thompson plots and called my mom while there, but she did not think the names were relatives until we came to this one.

The Anna Thompson photo is possibly the grave of my great grandfathers wife, or I should say one of his wives. We believe this is his first wife and the empty plot is where he would have gone. His second wife took all his money and we think he is in Locustwood on route 70.
