Hawk Island, Delanco,NJ

Today, a friend and I were exploring on Hawk Island in Delanco. It is not actually an island anymore but a peninsula on the southern end of Delanco. A 1902 topo shows it as an island but the Army Corps of Engineers used it for dredging spoils up until the 80's. Our reason for going there was for bird watching but we did not see much.
We did see this however. We think it was a cabin from a dredge but we're not sure.

After exploring some more we were heading back and passed a fox's den. Not 30 yards past it we came across this fella taking a nap. He was oblivious to our presence at first and I was able to catch him napping.

He then caught wind of us and decided it was time to go.

WOW! Nice one Steve. As Bob said I am jealous! They are great shots.

The building looks like I would have enjoyed using that as a fort when I was a kid. I guess many kids have done just that.

This is a 4 star post.

That is neat how close you got. I'm jealous. I have never surprised a fox.

I was about 30 feet from it. I was using my new toy. I got a new camera about three weeks ago. It is a Panasonic DMC-FZ20. It's 5mp and has a 12x optical zoom with image stabilization.<Tim Allen> ahg ahg </Tim Allen> :D

Thank Guy. Yeah it looks like it would have been fun to play there. The whole area was very nice even if half of it was man made. There was a huge pond there and lots of hills. Very nice.

Good old Hawk Island, I had a lot of fun hangin out back there when I was a kid. That cabin thing is actually the top of an old tug. I remember back in the early eighties it was infested with bees. The lake back there has some history too, believe it or not, a crane sits at the bottom of it and some contruction equipment and cars etc. There used to be two lakes but one was filled in. The reason they call it Hawk island is because it actually used to be an island. Dredging in the Delaware made it into a penninsula, if you walk back as far as you can go, there is a pretty nice view on the cliffs and the point. I should take pics sometime, i live so close. Great post, there are also a few deer back there too.

Hawk Island into a Park

I heard that the county is turning Hawk Island into a park with trails, etc. Do you know anything about it? How do you get on Hawk Island? I walk, bird and photograph on Amico Island and can see Hawk Island but don't know how to get on Hawk Island. Any help would be appreciated.

That's how I found Hawk Island. :) Just cross over the bridge into Delanco and make the second left and go to the end. There is a gate and says keep out. We called and asked the chief of police for permission and he said yes, people go out there all the time. Sure enough when we were out there we saw several people. It's a neat place and worth a visit.
