Hawkin Rd, dirt section.

Two weekends ago Fish and Wildlife had their Expo at Colliers Mills. I took my Daughter there. When we were done wandering through the exhibits we went for a ride south on Hawkin Rd. We came upon this survey marker, it's fairly new, cement, with a silver disk in the center. There wasn't anything written on it. It should be very close, if not on the Lawrence Line.

We need a better photo. In any event, that is a bench marker for sure if there is a disk on it. You need to utilize Ben's maps to give us a detailed location. Hawkins Road is basically the Lawrence Line so that may be just a lot that intersects it.

Picky, picky, picky... This would be close. All the blue tape 10-20' from the road stands out like a sore thumb. I don't think it's a BM, the disc didn't have anything on it.

I am not really being Picky. In any event, the Lawrence line runs right here. You can see the military line just below it and that is the Lawrence Line.

I kinda figures the boundary for Ft. Dix south of 539 and Lakehurst north of 539 were the Lawrence Line. Too bad the Military ran a fence about here.

I'd really like to photograph some of the stones, but I have no clue where to start. I really don't kin to the idea of walking the whole line. Can someone put me in a very close neighborhood of one? And, how far apart are they placed? Do all the stones have a number chiseled into them? I understand there's several in Colliers Mills.

The one in Colliers Mills was the 1856 stone and it is gone. There may be other monuments in the area but there are no stones. The next monument I visited is in the back of a house on 537.

The Hanover 1824 stone was near 70 but that is also gone, and the next closest known stone heading south east is across 72.

So, Your saying the 1856 & 1824 stones were Lawrence Line stones? I think I know the house on 537. So these stones weren't placed at a set distance apart?
On a side note, I noticed on 528 east of Hawkin by half a mile or so, on the west bound side, a lawn has 2 stones some 30 yards apart, SW to NE, that look out of place for lawn decorations. Way too far east to be LL, but interesting and strange.

Yes they were Lawrence Line stones. The stones today are placed exactly one mile apart. However, there were stones along the line in various other places but they are not there now. The surveyor John Taylor and various other surveyors made it a project to find all of the stones along the line. They had a researcher check many of the property surveys it passt through and were quite thorough in learning where they all were. I have spent years trying to find another stone on the line, especially from the shore to route 70 and I have been uncessful. I have found monuments along it that they did not mention, but for the most part they did well.

The stone above is behind the yellow house with the large safe in the basement. Some say it was for the Prospertown Post Office. This stone looks like a modern concrete property marker. Thanks for the info!

Yes, it is a concret monument. As I said there are no known stones on the line above route 72.

I guess I should have clarified I am refering to the first 40 miles. In reality I am refering to the portion from 537 to the shore. I have not traveled further up the line as I do not really have an interest in that portion. I am sorry I did not make that clear.

I've detailed a co-worker to photograph Station Rock for me. Although I do cover Pa. I guess I could put myself in a position to be near enough to sneak into NY to do the deed myself...

HEY! I don't see any chatter about the Keith Line. Any interest in that?

The Keith Line today is the Burlington County/Ocean County line in our area. There are numerous concrete monuments and at least three known stones along the route. There were more stones but the ones I know about are gone. One was where what today is a tank route at Ft Dix. I was unceremoniously thrown out of that location just as I visited it quite a few years back. I recommend you don't trespass on Ft Dix property. The stone was placed there in 1854.
