My daughter is doing her science project on the Pine Barrens and their need for fire. Can anyone point me to any useful information? We have learned thus far, from our research, that the fire helps open the cones so that the trees can continue to grow. We would also like to visit some Pine Barren areas (if the snow would let up) but we are in the Eatontown area. Where would be the closest place? We also need some basic information on why the pine barrens are important? What animals/plants are dependent upon them? How would NJ change if there were not more pine barrens? What are their importance to our state, etc?

Any help would be appreciated. This is her first science project and she is so excited. I would like to keep this excitement alive.

Thanks in advance,
Kay
