Saw a really nice one yesterday. About 16" long. I had taken off my pack and was kneeling down and there he was, about 3 feet from me.

Nice one! I have only viewed one before, near Chatsworth. It was darker.
Love em! Used to find em a lot as a kid.have only found one as an adult and that was late 90's at menantico
I feel they are one of those snakes in major decline. They should be far more widespread and seen. Very cool snake.
Only eat toads which I think are also in decline due to pollution and other factors. hognoses need open areas and benefit from forest fires and cleared areas. I would only see 6-12 hogs a year while spending 20 hours a week in the pines. I certainly would see far more pines, timbers, corns, kings and coastals. Not a lot is known about hognoses, no studies done on them like the T and E snakes. Typically randomly found in the way Bob saw this one. Not a species you can target and seek out consistently like you can with other species.
