Saw this the other day and thought it was an interesting article. Would be fun to view the Pines from that perspective. Just like the people from yesteryear!

I've been riding in Wharton since the late 70's. What is really great is that you can get close to wildlife. They don't see us as humans when on horseback. Cyote, fox, deer don't spook much. We even had fawns follow us. Turkeys are another matter.

I am jealous. we used to rent horses from a guy over by the pic in the early 90's. Great way to see the pines. Always thought it would be cool to do an overnight trail ride.

I've seen people with rope corrals at the Batona Camp. I don't know what the Park Police think about that but I know dogs are not allowed. We did some moonlight rides out of Carranza up past Apple Pie Hill. Since someone painted the monument there are signs "closed dusk to dawn", like that's going to slow down someone who would do something like that. Once again responsible people get screwed.
There are endurance rides held in Wharton every year. We enetred a one day 30 miler. They checked the horses pulse, resperation and overall fitness every so many miles. It wasn't enough to be fast, you horse had to stay fit. There is also a much longer one over several days where the horses are put up at local farms for the night. My legs hurt just thinking about it.

A friend of mine lives along Forked Neck road and has several horses, I know he rides out there often. someday I'll get a lesson. would be a great way to see the area.

Do they have to get insurance to ride horses on State lands? I thought I read that in the game law book. I was curious what that would cost.
