Found this online and enjoyed reading it,
A faint breeze rustles leaves on the spacious front lawn. A mosquito helicopters into view, searching for its next blood meal. There is a distant buzz of a lawn mower, and every few minutes, a car whistles past on the two-lane country road.
An old man with a shock of white hair and thin, bony hands sits on a battered green chair on his front porch, flipping through pages in a scrapbook.
"That's a picture of a field trip," he says, pointing to a newspaper clipping, "led by you-know-who."
When was the picture taken?
Howard Boyd thinks for a moment, then shakes his head.
"My memory is getting a little bit on the dim side," he confesses.
At 93, Howard Boyd may be entering the twilight of his life, but he is not quite ready to call it quits. The Tabernacle resident, who has devoted much of his life to the exploration and study of the Pine Barrens, has just finished writing his fourth book on the topic.

Is there a way we could just download all barrens related info in his head into our own? I'm only half his age and don't want to depend on making it to 90 and even then wouldn't have all that accumulated. We need a human compatible USB cord.

I am very saddened to hear this. :(

Howard and I were out a few times together and we used to talk a lot whenever I saw him. He treated me like he knew me his whole life, and even put my name in as a companion of his in his book "Wildflowers of the Pine Barrens"

I remember one time I took him and his wife Doris in real deep in my area, and he was 84 years old then. He was bouncing through this cedar swamp, sticking right with me. His wife had to pull him back. He was so excited to be out there. Made me think of how I'll be at that age.

God bless you Howard. You did so much for the pines, and your legacy will live on forever. You were so kind to me, and a good friend.

Howard and John Bryans (Plexus Publishing) at Lines on the Pines in 2009 where he was honored and spoke. Many of us were there that evening.
Thank you Howard.

I was saddened to learn of the death of Howard Boyd, my longtime friend and frequent field companion. He was a true champion of Pine Barrens preservation and left behind a fine legacy of four books on the "barrens." Our friendship endured for 43 years, and I consider myself privileged that he asked me to review his "Field Guide to the Pine Barrens of New Jersey" (his most significant contribution) and "The Ecological Pine Barrens of New Jersey." Farewell, Howard, you will be missed, but fond memories of you will endure.

I just got word of this today. How sad. What a great man. I saw him at PPA last Novmember. Bought his latest book, now I have all of them. I enjoyed reading everyone and frequently refer to them. He was an incredible wealth of knowledge. I learned a lot about plants from him and he will be missed greatly.

I am a fan of his too - especially enjoyed his last book. Although I never met him - who knows... we may be related? My Grandmother, Blanche Boyd, died at 92 and lived alone in her little house in Marion IL right up to the end. I'm hoping I've got some of those good Boyd family genes. :) She was a remarkable woman, and while I was sad to lose her I also felt privileged to have had her for so many years. I'm sure Howard's family also celebrates his remarkable life and achievements, and hope that comforts them in this loss.
