I found a few more Pine Barrens photos c.1970 or so

I posted a bunch of them last year, and I just found a few more that I don't think I posted back then, though I'm not sure which is which, so maybe I posted one or two of these before, and maybe I didn't, and I probably have a few more that I haven't. Does that make sense?

Note my extremely useful and informative annotations, such as, "road".

I was trying out my new propane lantern in the camping photo. I think that may have been the only time I ever used it. I still have the tarp and the blue sack, but the Guernsey sweater is gone. I'm sure you people are very interested in the history of my tarps and sweaters.

VW Beetles were great in the Barrens. The last beetle I owned made it up to 300,000 miles, and the engine and trans. were still perfect, but it was rusting, so I gave it away. It was green. I never changed the oil, just added more Mobil 1 to make up for what fell out. Mobil 1 is great.

The top photo on the right is Sim Place and also the middle one one the second row. I have viewed those almost exact same photo's from Lost Town Hunters collection. My memory is very poor at times and Lost Town Hunter told me what the building on the top right was used for. It was some sort of chemical or fertilizer production for the bogs. I just wish I could remember what he said.

The photo of the sign at Washington is similar to the one that was at Martha that I have a very poor photo of. Yours does not say that it was made by the Boy Scouts in Chalfont PA so I have to assume they were not made by the same individuals.

Pan ...thanks again for your great photo's They are all really bright unlike some of mine.

Hi, Guy. I could upload the lot of them right here if you like so they'd all be in one place.

Great series of photos Pan and thanks for sharing them! I have always liked Beetles. I bought a '63 ragtop my junior year in high school and drove that car every chance I could when I got my license the following year (1990). I loved the sliding canvas top, but hated the lack of heat. It had a special transmission in it, a Berg 5 speed mated to a 2 liter motor. I was dumb and sold it to buy a '70 Mach 1.

Reminds me of my dad and I rompin or canoeing through the pines. Thanks for sharing. I know that he had a lot of good pictures of us at Colliers Mills, Prospertown, Oswego/Batsto Rivers, etc, but he took them when he left, and no one knew where they were after he died. Funny how simple things become so priceless through the years.

The so-called heater in those things was their very worst feature. You still see Beetles in mint condition out here in Arizona where there is virtually no rust. I spent a lot of ours underneath them adjusting the valve tappets and so forth, but I loved them. They never let me down. They were better in the Barrens than a Hummer or something because they were narrow like the roads, and they were light and had good ground clearance and good traction. I had a good semi-automatic windshield defogger in mine, namely a rag under the front seat. The windshield was so small and easy to reach, worked great. I never had a convertible Beetle though. I got a cool memory of one though:

I worked at the '64-65 NY World's Fair as a Greyhound bus and Glide-a-Ride (tram) driver-tour guide (the best job I ever had!). Before the Fair opened, when it was still under construction, and I was at training, a man in a Beetle convertible drove by barking out orders with a German accent. He was some kind of construction supervisor. He was driving the thing standing up!

Pan, it wasn't a convertible. My car was no different than a hardtop bug, except the roof had a piece of canvas that slide back and opened up the entire top of the car. I remember driving home down 537 in the hot summer nights and enjoying the sweet air cascading into the car. Good times!

That was the VW Sun Roof. I never had a sun roof Beetle but I had a few plain Beetles, starting with a '57, and my last one - the one with 300K - was a Super Beetle. Another good fresh air device was the vent window that cars used to have but have no more. But I had to put vent window locks on mine because they were too easy for thieves to pop open.

And, finally, the 1969 NY Times Travel Section article that made me want to go down to see the Pines in the first place -

"Wild and Windswept Plains that only the Jersey "Pineys" know" -
