Wow, that is a bad trend! They are now selling pieces of historical ruins on ebay. What is next, hampton furnance, harrisville? I have never been to the ruins of the Jersey Devil house as depected in Beck's book, but I know it is frequently visited. I hope to go there some day, maybe, and just hope that something is left.

in my opinion,i think the legal authorities should get involved and investigate the matter?
my outlook is,whether it's slag at an old furnace site,an old cellar hole with material in it,sandstone from an old building,it should be looked at,thinking about the history,but never touched,especially taken by the souvenoir hunters.prosecute to the fullest.

So we are to believe that the land owner doesn't want any pictures taken of the foundation and yet allowed this chump to take a brick from the site? Sounds a bit fishy.

in my opinion,if this ebay sale is legit,the man who owns the property,has every right to do as he pleases,but,in cases of historic articles,i believe if they are to be removed,they should be put in a museum(atlantic county heritage society)on shore road in somers point,i find it hard to believe,if money was needed,that he still did this?maybe a charitable collection should be taken to help hin out,and the state,county,should reclaim the above mentioned artifact.

Maybe not! I sent him a note via the "questions for sellers" basically explaining the irresponsibility of selling such an item and that it was the wrong thing to do. I wasn't nasty, but I told him what I thought.
Now, an hour later the auction was ended early because "the item was lost or broken" a protocal type excuse for ending an auction early. Perhaps myself and maybe a few others were instrumental in changing this guys mind. I'd like to think so. (I wonder if it was guilt or fear of prosecution if he took it without permission.) I let him know the pine barrens community were aware of the auction.

when i first read the thread earlier today ,about the brick,my blood pressure went to the danger zone which happens everytime i read about the trashers and vandalists in the pines,i had to play call of duty 2 on the pc for an hour or so to bring it back down.

And here I am sitting on a perfectly authentic Big Black Mailbox taken straight from the depths of the pines. Guarded by a vicious pack of Squirrels nestled away in the forgotten town of Goshen.

The seller of the brick responded to me today. Here is the response:
"I don't think that this is as big a deal as you are making it out to be. You are probably just pissed that you didn't think of it first.
However, I am not an unreasonable person and I really don't care about the money so I will pull the auction. To be totally honest I didn't think anyone would give it a second look. I'm sorry for getting the entire Piney community in an uproar. Consider the auction canceled."
I resonded:
"This kind of an auction could lead others to begin selling off pieces of not just the Leeds house, but other historically significant ruins as well.
You did the right thing. You should sleep well tonight. Good luck to you in the future."
