If You Hear Shots....

The NJ resident goose season opened today with a 15 bird bag limit and extended shooting hours. It runs until September 30.
Unplugged guns are allowed as are electronic calls.
My son is hunting on Mantua Creek tonight with his dog Hank and I hunted a local area with no dog in Waterford for about an hour. Little Murhp is still too jumpy.
Somehow 95 degrees doesn't feel like hunting season to me.

Summer bow opens tomorrow. I may go hunt in Monmouth County tommorow afternoon if it is below 75 at 3 pm. I have never hunted the early archery season.

Most of the time the the first two weeks of fall bow doesn't feel like hunting weather.

The goose body count so far is ten.
I shot two on Monday and Mike and his buddies have accounted for the other eight.
Hank is doing great on the retrieves but we are having a hard time getting him to be a chaser dog when we have birds roosting on water.
He doesn't seem to understand that when they get up, we have a chance to knock a few down for him. He swims half way to them and then turns and comes back as if to say, "Those birds aren't dead yet."
We need a border collie with webbed feet.
We made a big batch of goose jerky Wednesday night and we had cutlets on Monday night.

I may go out tomorrow early with the bow in 25. We aren't done ocean fishing yet but we have to stay around here for a funeral tomorrow late morning.

We were on Carranza Road last evening and Jennifer said the man in the car that went by us had mud all over his face. Later, we went to Nixon's for something to drink and they were in there getting food. It was a hunter with face paint.

Mike takes his waterfowl hunting very seriously and he and his buds gets all painted before hunting.
You really can notice a plain, white face across a swamp background from a distance.

I just bought a face paint set at Atco sports complete with mirror. I just hope it doesn't clash with my lip gloss and mascara.

They picked up 9 more honkers yesterday on some private and public lands. Not one banded bird in the 19 taken so far.

This kid loves to hunt as much as I do. He was up at three yesterday morning and bowhunted in Mantua. At noon they shifted gears and jump shot geese from land on some private ground around here and killed 7.
At 5 p.m. he took his boat over to Mantua Creek for an evening hunt and decoyed 2 more.
Hank got a workout but at least he got to skip the bow hunt.

This kid loves to hunt as much as I do.

I'm jealous. I bought Nick some swamping boots to go with me, and he only wore them once. Oh well, one cannot expect their child to love their own passions. You are a lucky man in that regard.

Nick does love baseball too though, so we do have some things in common.

When I was younger I thought the face paint was going a bit far, perhaps the result of watching Rambo too many times. Then I had chance to see some photos taken from a small plane flying over the then Brigantine Natl. Wildlife Refuge during duck season. Each group of hunters was totally hidden by their camouflage clothing, boats and equipment, with the exception of their faces. Their location was given away by the refection of the sun off their faces, which looked like big white plates from the sky. From that time, I’ve been carefull to at least knock the reflection off my face with a little mud wiped over it. But I do keep baby wipes in the truck to clean off a bit before I stop for coffee on the way home. I don’t want to look any sillier than I have too.

I have bagged 2 so far. I got a new dog this year, a catahoula. They are Louisiana hunting dogs. My dog is about 1 year old and she is doing great, not a great swimmer yet but she gets around. She isn't scared of gunshots, unlike our last dog a lab/boxer mix. The only problem I have had with my catahoula is that if I leave her alone with the dead geese she will start to eat them. We do feed her mostly raw meat though.
