I closed my eyes and picked a spot on Terraserver in the plains to visit today. I was pleasantly surprised to find a nice clear running stream with a hard sandy bottom. My favorite kind of Pine Barren Stream.

Nice, clean, cold:

It continued nice upstream for a 100 yards or so, and Buddy found his island:

I then bushwacked to a second stream in a cedar swamp, and ran into this unwelcome place:

Hmmm, whats up here,

Its a big gun club, way out in the plains area, with a heavy duty gate:

I left it as it was you ranger cops reading this. Then, I found a fancy deer stand made out of a shower stall. Not a bad job:

Here's a real imaginative stand. Some guy took a mopar seat, bolted it to a small turntable, and wrapped it in wood. Either that or its a crazy sex chair

Goodbye 539, till we meet again. I really like it down there:

Very nice Bob. As usual some very funny comments. :)
I always enjoy them.

The stream looks almost like the Dwelling Place.

The third link is wrong I believe.

I am going to a wild game dinner in March that a buddy of mine holds every year and this year he is renting a gun club off 539 called Big Horn.
Sound familiar Bob?
This is the first year he has had it there and no one has seen it yet.

No, I never heard of that one Scott. This one is named "3 Foot" and it is East of 539. Most that I have seen in the plains are West of 539 over by the Oswego River.

Great shots. That stream sure would be a neat spot to walk through on a hot summers day. "Bermuda is one of my favorite spots. My girlfriend and I first spotted the spot on a long meandering hike through the area. We wanted to stroll on the sandy area at the base of the rise on the opposite side. As we were walking on the shoreline my left leg immediately went down into the sand. My girlfriend was on the inside and pulled me towards her.

By the way, I am super-pleased with the new boots and socks I have for this winter. If you have the money they are very well worth it. I spent 3 hours in ice water and snow and my feel were warm and dry the entire time. When I took the boots off at home, steam came out, and yet my feet were dry, which means the socks were doing a great job pulling moisture from my skin to the outside of the sock. Here is the sock:

And the boot:

I have not needed the heat packs yet.

Where is Bermuda TRA?

Hmmm, I was just looking through your photo's a little while ago and one of them is labeled Bermuda. I was going to ask that question of you.

Nice boots, BTW, and they're on sale now too.

Oh, now I understand. I had forgotten about that photo. That's the spot TRA meant. That is at the big sand pit in Woodmansie. I called it Bermuda because of the color of the water, which I imagine Bermuda looks like off it's shore.

Its a good thing he didn't sink up to his waist with his head just under water. Yikes!

Great post Bob. That stream is very enticing. The plains east of 539 huh. I've only been in that area twice briefly and I didn't get very far into it. I remember thinking that I had to get back there someday when I had some time to spare. As I recall it is very secluded with few trails and even fewer dirt roads...very cool. Count me in on your next excursion there.

Too bad I got your email late Jeff, I went back to a spot downstream today. I was looking at Terraserver and saw a light spot, and I could not help myself, I had to see what it was. I thought it was light sand, but it turned out to be leatherleaf, which does happen:

http://forums.njpinebarrens.com/gallery/displayimage.php?album=241&pos=14

The creek here closes up a bit and many cedars fell into it:

http://forums.njpinebarrens.com/gallery/displayimage.php?album=241&pos=16

Down here, there are many grotesque shapes to some of the logs. Look at this one, I wonder what the heck happened here? How did the big log get so tangled up?

http://forums.njpinebarrens.com/gallery/displayimage.php?album=241&pos=19

I went back upstream, and things opened up a bit:

http://forums.njpinebarrens.com/gallery/displayimage.php?album=241&pos=31

Then I did find orchids and bog asphodel. A very good sign. I also found curly grass fern. Here is the asphodel with an orchid remnant leaning against it:

Here is a look back at the section I found the flowers in:

And a quiet section prior to heading out to 539:

Wow, that stream is just beautiful. Sorry I missed meeting up with you. A little later in the day I was out near 539 also, but further north. I definitely have to check out that stream. It looks so untouched. God willing it stays that way! Great photos Bob.
