I don't quite follow what you meant Tom. If that phrase means ""nothing can be done about it", it seems the opposite happened. They DID do something about it. Or, is your meaning that.."no use crying about it, let's just get this done".

The phrase has been used by many western writers to describe the ability of the Japanese people to maintain dignity in the face of an unavoidable tragedy or injustice, particularly when the circumstances are beyond their control.

That is what I thought you meant. I wonder if New Orleans was scrubbed over in similar fashion and in similar time. I doubt it. I think that, except for the French Quarter for tourists, that they should have told everyone else to find a new place to live. And yes, help them do that via no interest loans and whatever is necessary.

Slightly changing the subject, Tom mentioned earthquake. If you have the new Rolling Stone magazine read the article on Fracking. To Frack, they pump millions of gallons of water and chemical down into the earth and then remove it for the gas to come out. Once removed they have a problem getting rid of the chemicals. Much of them are lubricating chemicals that the feds have had problems figuring out what they are. Anyway, if they can't get rid of it locally they ship it to Ohio where it is pumped underground forever. Seismologists have determined that the rare and most recent earthquakes in Ohio have been caused by these lubricating chemical lubricating the plates of the earth causing them to move more easily.

With that said, Fracking is happening in PA and NY quite a bit now, and I am wondering if these chemicals will cause us to have more earthquakes. To me this is very scary especially when the article explains that Fracking is a business that could go bust overnight. The way they purchase property and rights to Frack is unbelievable. And the one man who is leading the way on all of this sometimes sells much of the land or Fracking rights to China. He basically is a land speculator.

I would suggest that all of you buy a copy of Rolling Stone and read that article. Obviously, you may want to read other opinions which I am planning to do.

I have no idea, lot of opinions floating around but no hard evidence of anything, but I do like the way 'frack' rolls off ones tongue.

Fracking is something we don't need in New Jersey. The process is bad news. The list of chemicals used in the cocktail that is pumped into ground, I don't want to ever drink. The argument is that only a small percentage of the mix is added to the water that is used in fracking, but when hundreds of millions of gallons of water are used during one year, that can equal hundreds of tons of chemicals. This process shouldn't even be used as a last ditch effort. Deliberately putting known carcinogens into our drinking water should never be done. The owners of the companies doing this, should have to live nearby and use the ground water. In the link I provided look at the list of chemicals that are used.

Just opinions? No hard evidence of anything? What is it that you do, just take a few snippets from headlines in order to zing out your comments in rapid-fire?

Suppose they announced they were going to Frack in your neighborhood. In order to determine for yourself if it is safe or not, the problem is not a lack of evidence. The problem is sorting through the mountains of evidence that are stacked into piles of pro and con. Therein lies the challenge for those who really want to understand.

I am a proponent of Wikipeadia...in fact I send them a modest contribution each year. Anyone who badmouths Wiki as at least a source to start for information really doesn't know what they are talking about. If you don't believe anything at all in the main article, then review the huge amount of references cited in the footnotes. I don't believe everthing I read in Wiki right away, but I do get a very good sense of what is true or not, and mostly, that information in Wiki is accurate enough to at least understand the concept. I'd stack Wiki against any of the old encyclopeadias that used to be peddled around by itinerant salesmen. The moment they hit your doorstep, they were out of date.

My decision is that I don't want it in my neighborhood. Although it is not harmful in every case, it does add problems for the environment in many cases---enough for me to say..."I basically support it as a bridge to clean, renewable energy--a way to get us off fossil fuels forever, but I hope that the industry continually researches its methods to make it a safer process each and every year that the process continues".

Yes, in the case of Fracking, I am a NIMBY.

Nay, I do not jest. Never understimate the will of an author to write a factual Wikipedia article that withstands the scrutiny of their peers. Nobody wants to look like a fool, and most of the technical articles written on Wiki are written collaboratively by everyone from college professors to industry engineers.

Your post totally ignores the wealth of articles I pointed out in the footnotes. If you don't beleive the main article, you can find more meat at the bottom.

Edit: I concede the last statement about your research methods was unwarranted. I have no proof of that.
